Good God i hope Carrick does not start any game for England ever again, let alone in the WC finals! I can see him starting with Gerrard and Lampard if Milner is in the team as well, we'll see.

Crouch instead of Heskey as Crouch is our most prolific England goalscorer .

Gotta be Heskey and Rooney. It's no surprise Rooney was banging them in during qualifyling when big Emile was next to him and he didn't score for the last 5 games when he didn't. He doesn't score goals but Rooney is twice the player with Heskey next to him.

No it doesn't considering James is Englands number 1 , and he was just trying different things .

Hmm, I'm not so sure. He did also say he wanted everybody who would be in the opening game to play at least 45 minutes, and Green's had the shirt recently, not James.

My choice of team exactly, obviously bringing Barry in to replace Carrick when fit.

This formation may not work but I'm amazed Fabio didn't try it in any warm-up games, at least with those players in those positions.

If we are to go 4-4-2 I can't believe people would go with anything other than Rooney and Heskey. Crouch and Defoe simply don't cut the mustard at the top level against good sides, despite Crouch's goalscoring record in qualifying and friendlies. Also, Gerrard and Lampard can't play together as a two in central midfield, have we learnt nothing from history? If 4-4-2 play Barry and Lampard in the middle with Gerrard on the left and Milner on the right, or drop Gerrard and put Cole on the left.

In defence of crouch people say he doesnt score against the big sides, but I didnt see Rooney score against Eygpt, he came on and won the game for us.

Its easy to say he only scores againt the small teams but take his goals away from some of those games and england would of been struggling.

I can only think that Carrick gets in the squad purely because he plays for Man Utd. If he played for Fulham, Scott Parker would have been in the squad.

I'm not knocking his goalscoring record, it's excellent for England, and you're right to say we would have struggled without his goals.

For me, though, he's simply not effective enough when playing against top-class international defences. They're clever and know how to expose his lack of strength and pace, and because of his style most of his aerial challenges result in free-kicks to the opposition. Heskey is more experienced, quicker, and stronger, as well as being a much more effective partner for Rooney. That's why I think he must play if we are to go 4-4-2, with Crouch/ Defoe coming off the bench.

By the way, in my previous post I meant to say Lennon on the right, not Milner.

This came up in another thread.

Crouch has made 7 appearances against "top sides", all sub appearances. Three of them were ten minutes or less, one of them was against portugal when we were down to ten men.

He hasn't exactly been given a chance against top teams.

I'm not a big fan of Carrick or SWP. Assuming Barry is NOT fit I think Cappello will go with:

1. James
2. Johnson
3. A Cole
4. Terry
5. King
6. Lennon
7. Lampard
8. Milner
9. Rooney
10. Heskey
11. Gerrard.

I'd give Milner the holding role and see how it goes. We all know Gerrard and Lampard doesn't work in the middle.

I think there's something in the fact the No.1 jersey has gone to James. Crouch will be the unluckiest man to be omitted, but the way I see it with Heskey it's "shit or get off the pot" time, i.e. put him in and see whether he's still the real deal.

The line-up above also gives Capello a lot of room for manoeuvre. Personally, I hope Milner cements a place in the side because I think he gives us an energy we need.

Milner is reported to have missed training today because of a high temperature. Don't know if it'll keep him out of the reckoning for saturday. Barry has supposedly been told he won't be risked on saturday.

It seems weird that James was given the number one shirt but hasn't featured. The report I read this morning suggests it's a foregone conclusion James won't start saturday. I imagine if this is the case, he was given number one out of seniority, as Capello had yet to decide who he wanted as first choice.

Probably about right, although as James has a bad knee, Green may start I guess. Not sure if the knee is bad enough to rule him out, but, wasn't it a knee that he had problems with during the season ?
