A photo from the last time we beat Switzerland in Portugal. Feels like a lifetime ago.

We were shite against Holland imho, but so much better today across all outfield positions.

I really hope Southgate remains open minded, as he was when he came in, about choosing future first 11’s based on who’s in best form for England. Not on reputation, the club they play for and/or blind loyalty. Several starters today were a markedly better.

I think Pickford, TAA, Gomez, Maguire have locked down 4 defensive spots, Kane, Alli and Sterling 3 attacking spots. The other 4 are up for grabs but I like Rose, Sancho, Winks and Henderson for the remaining places.

Rose or possibly Luke Shaw should be left back with Alexander-Arnold on the right definitely no place for Chilwell or Walker

Chilwell is only 22 and has just had a brilliant season at Leicester. He has also looked good for England in previous appearances. It is short-sighted and foolish to write him off based on this week.

Agree with you about Walker, though.

Excellent choices.

Lingard more often than not puts in good performances for England (despite ManU fans seemingly rating him as shite these days).

Edit: Forgot about Chilwell - a star of the next 10 years.

He has looked poor in all of his England performances and certainly not our best left back.

Chilwell’s only just starting out at International level and he was targeted with a thug’s challenge against Holland.

IMHO he’ll be a star for one of the Manchester clubs and England for the next decade,

Just watching Brazil v Honduras.

Brazil look very impressive and have scored twice early through Gabriel Jesus and Thiago Silva. Honduras don't know the meaning of the word 'friendly' - playing dirty as usual. Brazil will still blow the Copa America, starting Thursday.

Bloody hell!

Honduras player red carded for the most disgusting challenge after 28 minutes. That could be Arthùr out of Copa America. That'll be on YouTube shortly.

And now they've taken out another player - yellow card. Dirty gits. And now conceded a penalty!

Watched Connolly and Molumby playing for the Republic of Ireland rather than watching our shite national team.

Hardly the most disgusting challenge! He slipped, went to ground, and yes his studs were up. But he didn't launch into him and assault the guy. Probable red, but bit OTT reaction

Both had decent games although Molumby missed a penalty and Connolly showed his poor temperament a couple of times when things didn't go for him.

As I said, cleverer people than me.....

I just don't like it, on the principle that if you give people a powerful tool, then they are going to first use it as intended, then find more ways to use it. This is the path are now heading down. Common sense need not apply. I hope I'm wrong, we have yet to hear (and see) how the PL intend to use it. But am not hopeful. Not with FIFA, UEFA, FA and the PL in charge.

Agreed. VAR is very much the Nerds' Revenge. They weren't good enough to play so they sit there and pore over the TV pictures with their rulers and protractors looking for the tiniest of infractions. (Assuming they can find them of course as it's agreed even by the staunchest supporters of VAR that forwards and defenders will often disagree over penalties no matter how many times they study the myriad different angles). Very much upholding the letter of the law but not the spirit.

I don't want a perfect game, I don't want to swap spontaneity with perfection, I don't want to see goals ruled out because the ref and linesman missed the fact that someone's toenail was fractionally offside. I'll accept that match officials make mistakes the same as players and managers do. Letting the ref call for VAR assistance only if the officials can't agree is probably as far as I want to go.

The VAR "offsides" I find particularly irksome. There used to be a rule that level was considered onside - now you can literally have a pube hanging out that plays you offside. Absolutely ridiculous.

Offside is a law that was ultimately introduced to prevent players from goalhanging. Its not supposed to stop play when someone is level, but thats what we've got now, down to millimetres. Just another piece of shittery introduced to stop people scoring goals.
