Your memory doesn't stretch back to Andrew Flintoff then.

No it does, he was poor. I just firmly believe Root will prove to be considerably worse. He makes terrible decisions, his personal form is shocking, and he seems to make the team considerably worse than the sum of it's parts. He's dreadful, sadly.

That still reads like a description of Flintoff as captain, but add that he brought about his own demise, by massively over bowling himself when out of shape vs Sri Lanka, bringing on the ankle injury that ruled him out of the rest of the Test summer, only to return for the Ashes Tour when he never got up to full pace, or indeed got through a great deal of work. Add to that the total unravelling off the field, and the impact all of this had on the dressing room. Can't see Root is going to challenge those depths.

Love the bloke, love the cricketer, but Flintoff was a dreadful captain.
