It's now shiningly obvious that we will get a result out of this one. However, an England collapse could give Australia 2 and a half days to chase 350 odd on a 3rd day wicket What do you reckon?

I was listening to Tuffers on the radio last night, he was rather smugly saying that if we could get a lead of 300 or (better) 350 that would be enough for a fourth-innings target for the Aussies on the Oval wicket.

Basically I think we will need every run of our eventual lead that we can get. The Aussies will have their backs to the wall, the press over there would crucify them if they couldn't make a small target. Ponting and co. will have a lot of time to get the runs by the look of it, probably two days.

So I would say, we MUST get an overall lead of 400 or more. That means we need about 240 at least.

Reckon Ponting is due a captain's innings rather than the 8 he got first innings. And Clarke certainly won't be scoring 3 runs next time. Plus the Aussie bowlers suddenly seems to be firing on all cyclinders. So if the big collapso continues today, don't fancy England's chances much.

If you expect them to chase 300-350+ on this wicket, well your crazy.

copied from the other thread...

England could, should and WILL win this test match. We'll get a low score this innings, everybody will shit themselves, and then we'll skittle them for under 250.

No provision for a draw if we manage to bat out today but not score at a fast enough rate thus declaring tomorrow lunchtime. Leaving the Aussies 1 1/2 days to chase the target or defend for a draw, which is all they need to retain The Ashes.

It's a different story when you just have to stay in with the clock not a worry. You can let the bowlers flake themselves out in the heat, and just pick off the occasional bad ball. Oz nearly did it in 2005 remember?

OK that wasn't on the Oval pitch but Swan is no Jim Laker, or Warney come to that.

Swann took 4 in the first innings on a 2'nd day pitch, on a late 3'rd day/4'th day pitch he will get even more purchase from the wicket.

I hope you're right Wiz, as a brown-hatter I see Jim through rose-tints of course.

But when it's a question of just blocking out balls over after over, and waiting for the full toss or the one outside the stumps to sweep, then I think the Ozzies will have a different mindset, they won't sell you a wicket.
