We all know that statement is hugely inaccurate, it's down to a lazy journalist who is trying to justify why Lewis is suddenly in the England frame. Its basically them trying to save face. The alternative/correct thing to say would be ''He's always been a very decent centre back, great at defending his box, great with the ball at his feet, great at reading the game, and great passing range, but we've all been too ignorant to take notice''. But they're not exactly going to say that. Its just a journalist trying to create a narrative that Lewis has all of a sudden become good, and arent we all great for giving him his England moment at just the right time."He was always regarded as a bit of a bruising centre-back, great at defending his box and not much else."
Lines like that annoy me and you see it a lot. I posted the other day about the misperception many fans had/have of Dunk due to their first being introduced to him in the Hughton years in the PL. But did no one watch him in the Championship? And even when heading, blocking and clearing was his MO alongside Duffy in the top flight, it was plain to see he had the passing ability.
