Sorry mate, I have to agree with others, that was quite a boring post, you could have said all that in a quarter of that post. We all know the limitations of our squad but I think Hodgeson is a canny old bugger and has played his tackticks well. We didn't need to force the game, Ukraine did because they had to win. All we did is hold our position, stay organised and hit them on a counter. Plus the fact we were playing in front of 60k screaming Ukrainions gives massive kudos to the team for winning the thing. We will change and adapt against Italy

if last night we attacked and went 0-1 it would have been a nightmare to claw it back - we would have had to attack and then maybe gone 0-2 down.

this is cup football, KNOCK-OUT in case some of you have not noticed - you need to get thro! at all costs!

anyone ever watched the FA cup? this is not an exhibition of pure football, we do not have the players - for that blame the FA not the manager or squad.

teams huff and puff against us, and our shape is pretty good.

Johnson has been pretty good and has developed into a decent international RB.

Sorry, I stopped reading at that point.

As an aside, I must be the only person who thinks Glen Johnson HASN'T played well! I expect a rick from him every other time he touches the ball!

No, you're not the only person. I actually think Johnson is the only reason Milner gets in the starting line up as defensive cover.

Are there even 511 countries in the world? Let alone FIFA....maybe a wee bit more research needed buddy! Oh, and who cares how we get the results? We've had our best group stage performance since 96...so i certainly don't!

What a surprise. Goldstone, the resident boring, negative twat, posts a rambling load of shit trying to ruin all the good feeling in place after England massively exceeded expectations and won the group.

Let me guess, you think Kusczack is a shit signing as well?

What a waste of time that OP was. Wrexham outplayed us but we got through to the next round of the cup. It's irrelevant. England will raise their game against Italy.

Who gives a shit.

In Ukraine's backyard. In a European championships IN UKRAINE! With 60k nutty Ukraine fans going nuts for football IN UKRAINE! Only 4k English fans... Away game of the highest order... English players and fans nervous as hell because we were favourites... Rooney under all sorts of pressure to perform... Being ridiculously called our Pele... I'd have taken a flipping OG!

Now lets go and Chelsea our way to the trophy!

All correct. Glad he got shot down. Nobodies saying we are or have been world beaters... But we've played really well AS A TEAM and the players available to us. The spirit has been brilliant. SOME negative doubters really cannot ever eat humble pie and admit they were wrong. Yes first half we were poor(nervy) but 2nd half we were a lot better and defended like warriors. I ask for no more than maximum effort and we've had that x 3 at Euro 2012. Even if we go out now I'll be pleased with the tourno TBH.

The only time they broke us down and had a shot on Target was JT clearance of the line. Apart from that we defended superbly, and made a very Hostile Ukrainian crowd very quiet on numerous occasions. I don't care if we defend for 90 minutes after scoring really early on, if we get the job done and win that way so be it. Now go and support Germany, you twat.

That's not true, apparently we beat Switzerland in the 1954 World Cup.

I've just looked this up on Wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1954_FIFA_World_Cup Group 2 was quite tasty

West Germany 4 – 1 Turkey
Hungary 9 – 0 South Korea
Hungary 8 – 3 West Germany
Turkey 7 – 0 South Korea
Play off (??)
West Germany 7 – 2 Turkey

West Germany went on to beat Hungary in the final

Honourable mention for:
Uruguay 7 – 0 Scotland

Hungary were believed to be the best team in the world at the time. West Germany came from obscurity to win this one..the first of a few as we know now! I once saw a documentary on this tournie, and i'm sure the Germans rested most of their team in the 8-3 loss to Hungary, then took em by surprise in the final....that golden gen of Hungarian players were never to reach their potential. Good documentary...although i suspect i'm probably not doing it justice with this post! Anyway...back to the original subject...

...good win and i don't care how we do it at this stage!

Before the Euro's there seemed to be more private Fraser's than corporal Jones's, France so long unbeaten and too good for us, we never beat Sweden so it'd be all on a difficult last match against the hosts. Now we've qualified the Fraser's are at it again, whether we beat Italy or not we've exceeded expectations by hard graft and scoring some goals. When we got beaten by Germany in SA people were saying that the players weren't trying and didn't give their all for their country, I think it's safe to say that's not an accusation that can be leveled at this group of players. Hodgson has done all he could do with the players available, if he could call on Wilshere, Lampard, Barry and Scholes (I would only expect Wilshere to start) he could maybe "freshen" things up where necessary and change tactics or formation but he just hasn't got the options. I'm over the moon that we're in the quarter finals and not sick as a parrot!

The time's past since england playing a little-known east-european country was like man utd playing a third division team. Now its like playing stoke. And when man utd get a hard-fought 1-0 win away at stoke its considered the stuff of champions. England should get the same credit

This is a make shift side, with a manager who has not had time to mould a team. They have done a fantastic job, despite a lot of players missing through injury. The positives are that we are starting to look like a side that is hard to break down, and with time, Roy can work with the attacking side of the game. We have to have a solid defence. During the Euros I think the defence on the whole has been good.
Yes we do need someone like Wiltshire to be a play maker and when he is fit, it may make a big difference, along side the pace of the two Arsenal boys. Give it a couple of years, i can see England having a good side.

Totally agree with this, Every top manager will build their team from the back, first priority is dont concede. Thats pretty much all Roy has had time to do.......a good playmaker in the middle whose confident on the ball would improve England massively.
I can see this team developing well under Roy once he has a full pick of players.
However i wish we could keep the bloody ball better!!!!! Is it really that hard to do!!!!

I don't understand all the "hard to beat" and "solid defensively" comments. Did you not see the Sweden game? And lucky Ukraine had the worst shot to goal ratio of the whole tournament as they could have had a couple in the first half.

They had two goal scoring chances, both were offside too, all their other chances were shots from outside the box that hardly troubled Hart.
