We desperately need at least a draw against Italy, losing would be a complete disaster and put us on the back foot against Uruguay.

Hart
Johnson Jagielka Cahill Baines
Gerrard Carrick Lallana
Sterling Sturridge Chamberlain

I like this, though would be tempted to swap Henderson in for Carrick.

Based on form, would be half tempted to drop Rooney because he never does well for England and seems to drag the whole team down.

39 goals in 89 games. Never does well.

Depends who we play against , like if we need to defend more I would change Walker and Cole for Baines and Johnson , and possibly Townsend for Barkley but for Italy I would go as below :

Hart
Ashley Cole-Kyle Walker-Gary Cahill-Phil Jagielka
Adam Lallana-Andros Townsend-Steven Gerrard-jack Wilshere
Wayne Rooney-Daniel Sturridge

We need to break them down early !

But I'd be tempted to have Milner play just to make us tougher to beat.

Yep. Uruguay are going to SMASH us.

No Rooney? He's been utter turd the last two competitions. In 2010, one of the worst perfomers so you are probably right. He's not going to get dropped though is he?

In qualifiers.

He has been awful in the last two tournaments. not saying I would drop him. I probably wouldn't. I'd hope/expect him to produce at least some of his PL form. However, the last Euros and especially the 2010 WC he was woeful. His first touch was depressing.

What would I LOVE to see?

Hart
Johnson
Terry
Cahill (I hate "JT" but those two are a top partnership)
Baines
Gerrard
Wilshire
Townsend
Rooney
Lallana
Sturridge

Look at the team Robbie Savage has just posted in his weekly blog for the BBC. He has Gerrard and Wilshire in the midfield centre with a 3 of Lallana, Rooney and Sterling. Having both Gerrard and Wilshire would be suicide for England. You simply have to have a player who can defend/distribute at international level which is why Carrick must play.

England's MAJOR weak link is how vulnerable we look on the counter attack. Right from the loss to Germany in 2010 to as recent as that abysmal, friendly performance against Chile we have seen time and time again how shocking we are on the counter. 2 players holding and patrolling is a must. Even Henderson over Wilshere for me. Gerrard as good as he is passing his defending is pretty poor so we must have someone defensive alongside him.

With the attack of: Sterling Rooney Lallana and Sturridge we genuinely have a dynamic attacking threat full of pace and a terrific reflection of Premier League football at our disposal. I just think our continued defensive fragility will cost us against the 'bigger' teams.

Hart

Johnson, Jagielka, Cahill, Baines

Gerrard, Carrick, Wilshere

Rooney, Sturridge, Welbeck

I quite like the look of this. I would pick Carrick over Henderson every time, and although (allegedly) he won't be picked for Brazil, l'd love to see a fit John Terry alongside Cahill in central defence. They are well used to playing together at Chelsea.

You haven't watched him recently have you? :lolol:

I would have previously agreed 100%. However he has been up there with the worst for United in terms of where their level was previously compared to where it is at the moment. It's of course down to Hodgson to decide whether this is just a temporary thing at club level that can be rectified for England.

The fact is, on paper, the only generic defensive ROCK we have in the prem in form is Tom Huddlestone but it appears he's missed the plane somewhat. Maybe not mobile enough.

If Gerrard is sitting deeper I think you can get away with a SCURRIER/TERRIER next to him. Someone with the pace to go on beyond but also track back. Wilshire is the closest to that in my view but I also like Barkley.

Roy may play it safe and go for the liverpool pair of Gerrard and Henderson if they continue to work well together.

Rooney would not be in my starting line up. He doesn't fit with the system.

I agree with Paul Hayward on Twitter, I would absolutely go with a very young team with a smattering of solid Premier league players, like the Germans did a couple of world cup's ago.

I like Welbeck, as he creates chances for other players and draws out defenders very well.

As I was writing the post I was kind of questioning when I last saw him play. Truth is, we don't have the player I am talking about. I would go with Henderson over Wilshere who seems to offer much in his forward passes and dribbling but very little defensively.
