I was also into lasers at the time, I studied Art at Varndean 6th form College and the previous year the college took us to the Royal Academy where they had a Laser exhibition. So when ELO's act was full of lasers I was blown away.

Quite inovating at the time....

Just watched the Jeff Lynne documentary - amazing who he's worked with, and they all feature heavily in my LP/CD collection! Suspect I might be on Amazon filling in a few gaps.

Loved the bit where he and Tom Petty bumped into each other, and talked about starting a group, and who they would have in it. Bob Dylan! Roy Orbison! And the rest... Brilliant.

Hubby went up to that concert & came home raving about it. Said the spaceship was awesome and the whole concert was brilliant.

Always wished I'd gone with him.

I think he was way ahead of his time...music wise.

Interesting comment. At the time, he Lynne was regarded as a Lennon/Beatles copyist rather like Gallagher in the nineties. Elo became huge and had their day in the sun, but it wasn't really cool to own up to liking them. Lynne has also never been critically well regarded for his production work, particularly with Tom Petty. You may be interested in Lynne's two new albums. Mr Blue Sky is Jeff redoing ELO Greatest Hits on his own, and Long Wave takes some of his late 50's and early 60's favourites Berry, Orbison, Everlys etc and reworks in his own style.

Quite strange but myself and the good wife were just talking about his new albums, I think for me they will be a must!

He said in that documentary that he re did his albums with how he really wanted them to sound. Thing is, i love the raw sound from A new world record and earlier and thought it would be ashame to change them.

Good to see that concert again. never saw the "proper" ELO but i did see ELO part 2's first ever gig when they were at the Btn centre...and that was amaizing.

His first solo album, Armchair Theatre, is a must for ELO fans.
