He just might not be as good as we initially thought, he may really struggle with learning the language, it could be something quite simple as getting instructions.

Well obviously there are differences - Argentine Spanish famously uses formal personal pronouns and has Italian-influenced pronunciation (not that I speak Spanish myself) - but it's not like Spanish people and Argentines can't understand each other.
