Just been through the new boundary change proposals for the area. Yep, bored. Under these changes, should they happen, Norman Baker (LibDem, Lewes) would have to take on Simon Kirby (Con, Brighton Kemptown) for the new seat of Brighton East & Lewes.

Some mildly interesting proposals. Brighton Pavilion loses one ward and gains another - no major change in voting patterns. Hove would gain a fair amount of new Green votes. A new constituency of Seaford & Hailsham would be formed. Nothing happening in Eastbourne, though.

Where do you get the info on Seaford & Hailsham? From looking at it it looks like half of Lewes CC would go into Uckfield and the other have into Brighton East and Lewes.

Looking at the report you've mentioned (the one where Uckfield is the new constituency), the plans fro Brighton & Hove would probably indicate a Tory win in 'Brighton & Hove North' and a Green landslide in 'Brighton Pavilion & Hove'.

Neither here nor there
Seaford and Newhaven part of Uckfield? What's that all about? There are absolutely no links between the coastal towns and Uckfield and its surroundings. It's bad enough being part of Lewes (though more understandable as there are physical, political and cultural links) ... expect to see even less attention given to Seaford and Newhaven if this goes through. Object, people! Object!

It seems bonkers. Two very different areas and would be hard to find an MP who can comfortably wear both hats, which means one area would undoubtably suffer at the expense of the other.

Are the new boundaries purely based on dividing up numbers evenly and geographically?

Supposed to be.

No more than 5% either side of 76,000 per constituency.

Thanks LO. Strange that Uckfield is the constituency name when Seaford (which is also in the constituency ) has 10,000 people bigger than Uckfield.

Always been the same with Peacehaven/T.Cliffs combined, or Seaford, having far bigger pop'n's than little old Lewes.

Going by history I suppose.

I've looked at these this morning and it appears the Electoral Commission were getting smashed at the time they made these proposals.

How can Brighton & Hove, being a unitary authority have MP's from across two different Council constituencies?

Imagine the MP for Brighton East & Lewes having to offer counsel on the one hand to people from Moulsecoomb and then from Kingston - Two completely different sets of demographics.

In addition, how can Portslade be bunched in with Hollingdean & Patcham? Absolute madness!

Is this an effort to reduce the number of MP's or just evening up the constituencies?

Both. With - who knows? - maybe a bit of gerrymandering thrown in for good measure.

Caroline Lucas is MP for people in Hanover as well as Withdean; in Stephens Road and Surrenden Road.

Simon Kirby (and Des Turner before him) is MP for Moulsecoomb and Rottingdean. Nothing new here.

both, which means there will twice as much binfestery on each change.

lumping Lewes with Seaford and Uckfield (did i understand that correctly?) doesnt seem to be much of an issue, but Lewes and part of Brighton is pretty strange.

Quite. You can't get much more diverse in terms of left/right/authoritarian/liberal views than Brighton, surely?
