My youngest, Winker jnr jnr, has got a Christmas job doing this. She works from 4am-8am five mornings a week. Apparently the shift all start in the same place so hunt in packs to start with until they thin out as they go round. The shop opens to the public at 6am? so people then get in the way.
Ironically for this thread, many of the early shoppers are old people!

My grandson is home from uni, and working nights at Waitrose as a personal shopper.

Try this approach if you have to go to a supermarket this weekend.

Decide to be kind, helpful and considerate to a fault. Let people push past, block the aisles, trail four kids around and dither over choices. Step back and let people in a hurry through, offer to reach stuff on the top shelf for others, speak to people.

Allow lots more time for your shop.

Choose to believe that they might be behaving in a way you don't generally like because they have a reason you don't know and be empathetic.

I promise your shop will be more edifying, less stressful and will put you in a Christmas frame of mind. Plus, you'll spread some love.

I’m really not sure it will.

In public spaces I am polite to a fault, which is why today really made my blood boil simply because of how inconsiderate they were being, not because they’re old and confused.

I would never, no matter how old, deliberately make a barricade with my trolley so I can take ages choosing a product while people waited behind me.

Another example; I went through the checkout and the loaf of bread I bought wouldn’t quite fit in my bag. So I took it in my hand and cleared the space for the next customer. I then walked clear of the crowds in the busy till area, found a quiet space where I wasn’t in the way, and repacked my bag at my leisure.

You know, common courtesy towards other people. I don’t think people lose that when they get old.

In my experience the worst people for creating a barricade with their trolley are middle-aged middle-class women who abandon their trolley in the middle of the aisle and take no account of what is going on around them and how their actions might affect others. And this is not just at Christmas.

I've just got back from Sainos at bottom of Preston Drove where I was literally the only customer. Sadly for all the wrong reasons. There's a dozen police cars down there, the main road is diverted and there's about a hundred yards of police Do Not Cross tape, including the whole car park. It really does not look good at all

Before Morrisons Leek put in the scan and go check outs like everywhere else it was the conveyor belt check out. On this occasion i was behind a smartly dressed young lady and probably around £50 of goods and it was going fine until payment, she went to scan her phone payment declined so she had to remove a couple of items to reduce the cost and repeat payment declined this carried on until she was left with around six items left on the belt and success. Now come on it's not that hard to have some idea of what your fund's are, surely ?

I went to Waitrose in Worthing . . . People of all ages and very civilised. Particularly the sherry aisle, which was busy, always is in Worthing. The car park sounds like a dairy depot, cars riding speed hump and clattering like milk floats.

There was a bus broken down blocking the road outside . . . And I got a puncture on my scooter. 5 min fix with a spare on board Thankfully.

Only a few bits left to do, think I'll walk into town . . . HOlmbush is a no go area, I sneaked into M&S to collect a pre order and it was utter carnage

I was at the supermarket checkout recently with a trolley absolutely full to the brim with about a months worth of shopping. I was just about to start unloading it onto the conveyor when I noticed that in the queue directly behind me was a little old lady with a wire basket containing just half a pint of milk and a tin of cat food.

I wouldn’t normally say anything but on this occasion the spirit of Christmas got the better of me.

“Excuse me, but is that all you’ve got?” I asked.
“Oh, yes dear,” she said.
“Well,” I replied, “you may as well f*** off for 20 minutes because I’m gonna be ages with this lot.”

It’s just these little things that count at Christmas, I find.

That might be me actually. I often pop in to the co-op to get only a couple of things - so don't bother with a basket. Then I find that the cat food (or whatever) is on offer, and end up with loads. And of course the bag I took isn't big enough (because I was only buying two things), and I refuse to buy new plastic bags - so I spend time at the till trying to get too much into one bag, and balancing the rest on the top.

Mind you, the other customers are generally old biddies - so I'm just getting my own back for all of the above posts!!

Have to confess, guilty as charged, I frequently go in for a pint of milk but then grab all the offers

whats worse is I usually forget my reusable bag and end stuffing groceries in my pockets cos I refuse to pay 20p for a bag

Just popped to the supermarket here to pick up a few bits. The fish counter was a little busier than usual but other than that 'twas reasonably quiet. I was in and out in under 5 minutes.

I have adopted this approach this year and there are a few like minded people there too. Knowing smiles and little asides comments made. Much less stressful

Next thing the old dear’s money goes spewing all over the floor. Five minutes later all the coins are collected and handed over to the person on the the till - £9.96. The old dear gives up and hands over a £10 note. Mrs.Punal then left the shop and met me in the car park!
