Egypt holiday worry

Ww went on a 3 day cruise from Cyprus to Israel The Holy Land and Egypt granted it was 10 years ago, Not sure if they still run them now. Also we drove to Cyprus in 1995 and caught the ferry from Pireaus to Limassol via Rhodes which was going on to Tehran

If you drove to Pireaus, then you drove to Greece.

I went to Tunisia in 1981. It was a pleasant experience. I was based in Sousse on the coast. I was 20 and my g/f 19. Even though it was an educational cultural experience we both felt slightly uncomfortably with the freely voiced sexual innuendo. It wasn't only directed at my g/f! Fantastic sun, beaches and sites like Matmarta. Today I would not visit any country with perceived risk even if the holiday was free. Times have changed badly.

I went to Sousse in Tunisia in 1982. Got ripped off by some local lads, g/f was in bed for 3 days with bad diarrhea, got pestered all the time by traders wanting to sell smelly goatskin rugs, beggars abound at the local market which had fly ridden meat hanging around, was not wise to leave the complex at night......apart from that it was a pleasant experience. Not returned to any countries in this area since.

No we spent 10 days driving to Brindisi Italy then caught the boat to Patras and had a week in Greece. We then caught the boat from Pireaus to Cyprus and stayed there the maximum 3 months permitted with the car as a visitor, and then the reverse route home but only spent 3 days driving home back to Calais.in Italy

Sorry I assumed t that it was obvious we didnt drive all the way to Cyprus as it is an island but when talking of it we always say we drove to Cyprus, with the aid of ferries. As people would if driving to IOW or Ireland.

I worked for the U.N. and I went on 3 day cruise from Limassol to Egypt Alexandria port ( to Cairo and museums, pyramids etc ) in 2003. It was brilliant and very cheap price, not being funny but even then u never felt safe in Egypt , especially in Cairo

In Egypt we were told to keep the window blinds down until told we could raise them. What surprised me was the little garden shed type shacks people lived in but with freezers and colour TVs.

How was the ferry getting to Tehran? Quicker to go overland from Athens.

Very similar experience to me and the Mrs (then g/f). First place we went on a foreign holiday, also in Sousse. As well as most of the above, got badly sunburned (was a heatwave, temp well into the 40s) and stung by jellyfish. Hotel food was awful - remember looking forward to the one evening meal that looked ok on the menu that was posted in the morning - fish and chips. Can't remember what the chips were like but the fish was whole, fried to cardboard without any coating and had bloody great big bulging eyes. Happy days.

1) Ripped off by some locals - tourism is their only trade, of course they will want to make as much as possible, but clearly blame your naivety over them ripping you off. Only pay what you're comfortable paying for anything surely?

2) GF in bed for 3 days with diarrhea - more than likely just an intolerance to local bacteria in the water supply not indicative of the cooking being wrong or ingredients being off. You have to expect situations like this in very different surroundings.

3) beggars at the local market which had fly ridden meat hanging around - have you been down London road recently? Do you think poverty would be more or less prevalent in a poorer country? Hotter country = more flies around produce.... I doubt for one moment that your hotel were feeding you on said meat...

4) was not wise to leave the complex at night - it would have been fine if you had taken a taxi and gone to a well populated area.

Some people astonish me that they think whereever they go on holiday will be just like home. That's why you go abroad to experience different cultures and ways of life, surely?!

I did read a review once for a hotel in Sharm which was scathing about the food.....they then ended the review with....thank goodness there was a KFC and McD's in the town so we could get some proper food! It was so close to being a parody, but I don't think it was.

The ship was going there not us we got off at Limassol. Resumably people joined and left the ship in Rhodes and Limassol. This route isnt operating now.

Must have had wheels underneath like the yellow submarine boat/bus in Liverpool.:lolol:

Frankly I'd avoid ANY Arab/Muslim country, and that includes the UAE. Why take the risk? There's nothing they offer that you can't find elsewhere in a safe country except for the old stuff like the pyramids and they'll still be around when the world realises that there's no god, when there's therefore no religion, and the world is a far far safer place.

The place to go is the USA. All the scenery, beaches, cities you could possibly want; clean, decent hotels, good food, and people who speak a completely understandable version of our language.

They will still be there as long as ISIL doesn't get as far as Cairo. In which case, they may not.

Can't tell if you're being serious or not....

In other news i've just returned from a holiday in Kenya. The primary reason to go was for a friend's wedding but whilst there it would have been criminally rude not to explore.

The country is tremendously fragile and is still recovering following the Westgate Mall terrorist incident and it does still feel slightly on edge if you're anything other than a working class local but the will of the people and welcome they give to tourists is like nothing I have experienced anywhere else before.

A stunning country with so much to offer and a people willing to bend over backwards to be nice to all, so refreshing.
