The English Football League will continue to stage pilots with up to 1,000 fans at matches this weekend, following approval from the government.

EFL clubs were asked to put in requests by Tuesday in order for their plans to be signed off in time.

Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden will meet with sports bodies later this week to discuss the planned return of spectators to sport from 1 October.

The EFL said the pilots were an "important step" for fans' safe return.

Good to see another round of test events, but given 3,000 new cases a day and rising I can't see fans being back in grounds in October.

The way things are going, I would actually be very surprised if football gets through to the end of the season, even without fans.

It should be down to the Secretary of State for the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

However, earlier in the summer, when Project Restart was approved, our dear PM scuppered the re-start of county cricket, quite arbitrarily and unexpectedly, and for reasons no-one really understood.

Hard to see how the EFL fan test events add any value really, seeing as how the Albion did an EPL level equivalent with twice the numbers. Why not use that as the baseline?

The lack of fans at county cricket is a total disgrace. Completely controlled entry to grounds were not one visitor has to go inside a building apart from using the loo where you can also control entry. There should be fans at this ODI too. Madness.

Because every ground is different.

2,500 people at, say, Crawley Town (c. 41% of capacity) is different than 2,500 people at Sunderland (c. 5% capacity).

Even then, Brighton's ground was chosen, not for capacity, but for design. The concourses are pro-rata bigger than most others. There's fewer pinch points etc.

Good point, well made
