Slightly off topic but regarding Newcastle and Brighton progressing in the cup.

On one of the toon forums last week the question was posed whether they would rather be promoted or win the FA cup. Was interesting to see that virtually all posters chose the cup.

They will of course have a weakened team in the 3rd round but don't underestimate their love for the FA cup

Not really, Newcastle have been up and down a few times, but never won The FA cup. Fans of yo yo teams cant remember what year they were up or down but the year you win the cup would never be forgotten.

Its such a shame a few on here consistently demean the greatest cup competition in the world...modern football I suppose !!

I too would rather win the FA Cup than get promoted this season

I too, would rather Newcastle won the FA Cup this year, than got promoted.

Of course. But we will NEVER be a "global brand" - lets not start referring to ourselves as such.

Depends what you mean really. I think we've got a bit of a cult following in Japan following the rugby world cup and there's no reason why such relationships can't be cultivated.

Having half a dozen Japanese tourists who's heard of us doesn't really turn us into a global brand though, does it ?

Er... they've won it six times. They're a pretty successful cup team

Whoops !! yes but not in my lifetime..but yes they have been successful in 1910, 1924, 1932, 1951, 1952, 1955...I have to admit I didnt know they were that good in the 50s, why do they always moan, if my team had that history I would sit back smugly and go on and on about how much better all all was back in the day :)

They last won it in 1955. That's like saying England are a pretty successful World Cup team.

Not really. England have won the World Cup once: only five teams have won the FA Cup more often than Newcastle have

Doesn't sound a very PB thing to say. Plus I reckon people would drink more on a Saturday – especially given the number of times I've rocked up for an evening game only to find the place almost deserted with an hour or so to go...

It was at the fans forum the season Hyppia joined... cant remember the exact quote. Makes sense though sat pm people have things to do in the evening etc. Friday PM people can get plastered and deal with a sat am hangover?

Ok. They WERE a pretty successful Cup team - until about 3 generations ago. Since then they've been gubbins.

Very poor judgement by PB if he actually said that. Who exactly is drinking all this beer? Certainly not the Southern-captive commuters who it's touch-and-go will even make it there for kick-off time. Non-local fans will probably give the game a miss, as will most away fans unless they're making a weekend of it. Nobody's going to be thinking of anything other than getting back into town ASAP after the game.

It was a couple of years ago he said it pre rail crap etc

The cup has been demeaned by the fa and man U etc etc etc. It's hardly a wonder that this disrespect has blighted the fa cup since. That translates to how the fans feel about the competition. You can hardly blame the fans.
