Actor Edward Woodward dies at 79

Veteran actor Edward Woodward has died aged 79, his agent has confirmed.

The Croydon-born star had been suffering from various illnesses including pneumonia and died in hospital, said Janet Glass. Woodward is most famous for his roles in the cult 1973 horror film The Wicker Man, alongside Christopher Lee, and US TV series The Equalizer.

He was last seen on screen in BBC One soap EastEnders as Tommy Clifford earlier this year. The actor, who lived in Hawker's Cove near Padstow, died at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro.

Ms Glass said in a statement: "Universally loved and admired through his unforgettable roles in classic productions, he was equally fine and courageous in real life, never losing his brave spirit and wonderful humour throughout his illness.

"His passing will leave a huge gap in many lives," she added.

Woodward is survived by his wife, the actress Michele Dotrice, and four children.

I liked old Woody, & he'll always be a bit of a hero to me for his performance in The Wicker Man. RIP.

ps I always wondered what happened to 'Betty' btw. Sad to find out under these circumstances though.

Very sad news.RIP Edward Woodward.

The Wicker Man is one of my favourite horror films of all time and that scene at the end when he sees the massive straw effigy to be sacrificed in still scares the shit out of me when i watch it.

What a shame.
I used to like The Equalizer. It was like a more intelligent A-Team.

He was in the same class as my mum in infants and juniors in Lancing before the war. Mum has very fond memories of him... except he used to pick his nose in class.
RIP

As a fan of The Wicker Man I have high hopes for the cremation...

For under 30s, though, probably best known not for the Wicker Man, but for being the answer to the 'what do you call a man with three planks on his head?' gag.

Which is probably a more enduring fame ...

If you conside that a gag no wonder i've never heard it.... :tumble:

You must've been home-schooled, fella.

This was doing the rounds when I was at school 30 yrs ago, and my kids have picked it up from school in the past 5 yrs, along with such classics as: What do you call a man with a spade? - Doug, etc, etc.

Anyway, RIP Edward Woodward.

Sad news...The Wicker Man will always remain one of my favourites. I also saw him at the Theatre Royal about 30 years ago in The Beggar's Opera - he was an excellent Macheath

My favourite memory of him is an obscure one. He was the guest on the Norman Gunston show (Gunston was an Australian comedian of the 1970s who pioneered the joke chat-show concept picked by Denis Pennis, Ali G and others). Woodward was on to promote some show or another to be faced with Gunston's take on Othello. It remains the single funniest TV moment I've ever seen and one I replay often - Woodward, to his credit, was a real trouper and quickly picked up on the gag and played along. A top man.

Hmmmmm, I can see the remotest lines of a joke 30 years ago if you all know who he was. The fact that a current school child would say that joke implies you must have very young children

Maybe i too laughed but then forgot it when i was 4? Anyways, i'm sure it wasn't your joke originally so i'm not meaning to take the piss
