i went there for a uni interview(herriot-watt not the proper one)
on the way to the uni you had to go up the gorgie road, which, i believe was where trainspotting was filmed...i would avoid that road
the centre is nice- full of aussies and south africans though

There's a burger king at Edinburgh Waverly station and a statue of Greyfriar's Bobby by the bus stop on Princes Street.
Can't remember anything else.

I went there earlier in the year with the wife.
1) From the castle walk down the Royal Mile and past the new parliament building and then walk up Arthurs Seat (this is a must).
2) You can do worse than a romantic stroll along the Water of Leith.
3) If you've a spare couple of hours then catch a quick train out to Linlithgow where you can see the palace (birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots) and walk around the loch which is stunning, especially at sunset.

The one time I went there the place f***ing stank. It was so bad it turned my stomach and I couldn't smell anything else for the next couple of days. Apparently its once a week when the big distillery does something or other.
It pisses on Glasgow though.

Having spent 3 years living there I can vouch for the fact that it is a great city, one of my favourites. Places I would recommend are: Castle, Arthurs' Seat, Britannia (in Leith, so technically not Edinburgh), Royal Mile (spit on the Heart of Midlothian, it will bring you luck), if you are the active type try the artificial ski-slope. Plenty of decent pubs/clubs/restaurants, etc, etc, again it depends on your taste. If you want to mix with the pretty professional types then go to George Street, rugger-buggers it has to be the new town or grass-market, tourists, anything around the Royal Mile or West End. If you like good beer try the Caledonian Sample Rooms in Gorgie (bit of a walk from the centre but worth it), the most famous pub in Edinburgh "diggers" is a couple of doors away, another pub that was good was Berts' Bar in William street. Something else that I never got round to, but heard was a bit of a laugh, was the haunted walk, you get a history of the dodgier side of the city and I think people jump out to scare you from time to time.

If she likes the spooky stuff, try the Mary King's Close tour. They take you down to the old streets below the High Street. When people died in the plague, they literally buried the old city under the new one and you can see old streets, houses and shops, etc. Very odd.
