"Sussex CCC have announced that Ed Joyce has decided to step down from his role as captain for both the LV=County Championship and Royal London One-Day Cup formats.

The 37 year-old has skippered Sussex for the past three seasons after being appointed captain at the end of the 2012 season, and led the county to two successive third-place finishes in the LV=County Championship, the highest position in which Sussex have finished since winning the Championship in 2007.

Joyce will continue to play for Sussex and currently has a year on his contract remaining at Hove. The Irishman said of his decision, “It has been an honour to captain Sussex for the last three and a half years. I couldn't have asked for a more committed group of players and coaches to work with.

“We've had a very tough year in 2015 but despite this, we've received overwhelming support from the majority of fans and this shows the unity and family feeling that Sussex engenders.

“My increasing commitments with Ireland and the stage in my career that I'm at meant that the job this year became more a burden than a challenge to be relished. So the time is definitely right to hand over the reins to a new captain and whoever that is will have my full support. I'm also very determined to get back to scoring lots of runs and helping us back into the first division of the championship and to performing much better in white-ball cricket.

“We have so much talent in the dressing room and so many good people throughout the club that I'm certain we'll bounce straight back from this season.”

Sussex’s Professional Cricket Manager Mark Robinson said, “I’d like to thank Ed for all of his hard work and dedication that he has put into the job. He has always led the team with great integrity and commitment, and I’m sure that the new captain will appreciate having a player of the stature of Ed to be able to lean on for advice and support.”

Sussex will announce a new captain for both four-day cricket and 50-over cricket in due course."

Step up Luke Wright.

Not sure about that. Would rather he concentrated on getting runs without the pressure of being club captain. He had a great season with the bat and I am sure he will be keen to get back into the England team.

But not sure who are the other options for the captains armband.

This is the problem. The captain needs to be a guaranteed starter, who is not going to be away on international duty (probably). That basically leaves us with Wright, Brown or Magoffin, and possibly Nash. It is too much work for a wicket keeper to captain, bowlers rarely captain sides and Nash is getting more and more inconsistent. Leaving us with Wright as the only viable candidate.

I heard Chris Adams on the radio yesterday offering to help out at Sussex in any capacity, but was aware the Mark Robinson had his own people in place, and he didn't want to disrupt things.

Batting coach perhaps? At least until Robbo is sacked / walks away.

Chris Rogers would be my choice if we could get him.

Could we not bring an older experienced or promising batsman as a top orders batsman/captain.. In years gone by counties brought in players from the universities.

One down, one to go...

Absolutely this. I've often said that relegation for Sussex this season could have been a blessing in disguise, IF, and l mean IF. two people stepped down from senior roles within the club, and two new people took over.

Ed Joyce has done the decent thing, I wonder if the other person will????

Think we all know who I'm referring to don't we?
