And, to the surprise of absolutely no-one I'm sure, it turns out that in fact the US DOES have a treatment for Ebola but nobody has bothered investing money in developing it fully. http://scienceblogs.com/gregladen/2...la-we-have-it-we-just-dont-let-anyone-use-it/ After all, it was only poor black africans who were dying originally. But then 2 US citizens got infected and suddenly the 'experimental' treatment suddenly became available and further research began.

its not used because it hasn't passed through the hurdles of regulation we have concerning new drugs. who's going to pay for the research when previously there's a few hundred cases?

A patient at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York is being tested for Ebola. You can guarantee the results will be negative, but it’s a slow news week in the Summer and the tabloids love to ramp up the ‘fear factor’.

So because there's only been a few hundred cases so far of a virus which causes up to 90% fatality it's not worth researching the cure which is already known but needs further funding.

I wonder if the same attitude would have been taken if it were only a few hundred cases in the US? Oh look. We know the answer already I guess. But hey, it was poor black people before and they don't matter really.

yes, this is the reality of the world: research cost money and only those avenues that are productive are followed. a large cost is created due to the regulation we insist on to stop dodgy drugs with adverse, unknown side effects. i wonder how it really would play out if there were hundreds of cases in the US, UK or elsewhere, they wouldn't have approval to use the drug so would be blocked from using it. its been used in effect as part of an experimental study. you can dress it up as being about the poor or race, but end of the day there has been enough cases to justify research either.

A suspected case of Ebola is being assessed in County Donegal, the Irish Health Service Executive (HSE) has said.

It is understood that the body of a recently deceased man who had suffered what are described as Ebola-like symptoms was brought to Letterkenny General Hospital on Thursday.

The man had recently returned from Sierra Leone.

The HSE said tests were being carried out on the body.

It said: "The public health department was made aware earlier today of the remains of an individual, discovered early this morning, who had recently travelled to one of the areas in Africa affected by the current Ebola virus disease outbreak."

A case in Ireland, not so far away now is it?

"Ebola outbreak: Congo becomes fifth country with confirmed cases"

It appears to be spreading even though the boarders have been closed

"The Congo cases follow the outbreak which has swept through Liberia, Guinea, Sierra Leone and Nigeria, resulting in 1,427 deaths and 2,615 infections since March. But Kabange said: "This epidemic has nothing to do with the one in west Africa."

"Health minister says up to 15 people may have died but virus is not linked to epidemic that has spread through west Africa"

But, apparently theres another type of Ebola spreading

DR Congo is MASSIVE , this is an outbreak in the northern region. FYI the River Ebola is also in the northern region and the virus was named after it in 1976.

"UN health agency say outbreak is accelerating in the region while the death toll has now exceeded 1,500

(the problem) "is growing faster than we can handle both in terms of the number of beds and the capacity of the staff". It said patients are coming from nearly every district of the city and healthcare workers were "struggling to screen new arrivals, care for admitted patients, safely remove dead bodies and transport them to the crematorium".

It said it is so overwhelmed it can no longer administer intravenous treatments. MSF has five field hospitals in west Africa, plugging a gap left by the fragile health care systems. It says most of the medical facilities in Monrovia have shut down over fears of the virus among staff, leaving many people with no healthcare at all. This is leading to fears of a secondary health crisis with expectant mothers and malaria patients now going untreated too."

"The Senegalese minister of health says the west African country has its first confirmed case of Ebola.

Awa Marie Coll Seck told reporters on Friday that a young man from Guinea was confirmed to have the virus.

An outbreak ravaging west Africa began last year in Guinea, which shares a border with Senegal. Sierra Leone, Liberia and Nigeria have also had cases."

This is essentially what the President of the UK Facility of Public Health alluded to a few weeks ago on Sky News - because it is only affecting poor Africans, not much research had been done . He said it was the same with AIDS - not much was done until "innocent" people were infected (ie heterosexuals, women and children, haemophiliacs). Dunno how true that is, but it is an interesting view. It is also here www.independent.co.uk/news/world/africa/west-accused-of-tardiness-over-ebola-outbreak-9644671.html
