Club chairman Jason Botley says they have made the change to try to tap into the regeneration of the area - and fans groups have backed the decision.

Botley told BBC Radio Kent: "It is with a view to looking at the area and the development of the club longer term.

"With the influx of new housing and business and the development of the Ebbsfleet area this is the catalyst for us to move forward and upwards."

The Football Association has approved the change, which will take place with immediate effect.

Gravesham MP Adam Holloway has backed the decision to change the club's name.

"I like the old name and seeing Gravesend appear on the TV," Holloway told BBC Radio Kent.

"But if the fans and the directors think this is going to move the club onwards and upwards then things have to evolve, and they've got my support.

"You have to put it in context of the future of the club and the plans that are there are pretty amazing.

"They've got some great plans for a new stadium with more capacity. It's not a done deal yet but I think they're soon going to show some pretty impressive plans.

"I'm sure some supporters would like to keep the traditional name, but times change. It'll always be the same club even if it's got a different name."

Ebbsfleet is the name of the main Eurotunnel link station, therefore will become synonomous with the area soon, and the station is a short walk from the stadium. A smart move methinks

They couldn't have come up with a new logo? If you're going to change the name of the club then why not a new logo as well?

And what about Ebbsfleet FC?

Latest News: 03/05/07

Ebbsfleet finish season in a respectable 4th place

Club History:
Formerly Greenhithe Utd, a reshuffle of players and staff combined with relegation from Division 4 saw the club change its name to Ebbsfleet FC in 2002.

Ebbsfleet showed great bouncebackability and were promoted in 2004, finishing in 3rd place playing good attractive football.

Last season Relegation from division 3 was avoided having added to the squad during the summer and finisishing 4th bottom. A squad made up of youth and experience narrowly lost out on a win on the 2nd May in the Presidents Cup Final, but has nevertheless gained runners up honours and further promotion up the North Kent pyramid.

Flourishing from sponsorship by The Elephants Head, the club has a 6 man committee and is looking positively forwards.

Exactly.
Ebbsfleet will become a very well known place name over the next few years, certainly relative to "Gravesend and Northfleet".

I didn't know they were going to do this, but it seems a good idea.
