They've managed to do it it with a puck in ice hockey , so why not have flashing red lights embedded in the goal posts to confirm the ball has crossed the line ?

yes.but how do you make absolutly sure that the chip is in the centre of the ball, as if it moved to one side then goals could be given which did not fully cross the line.

multiple chips in the ball would solve that problem.

Haven't they trialled the the ball with a chip and it/they kept getting dislodged? Or they couldn't stop the chips becoming dislodged so the trial was cancelled before it got going.

multiple chips in the ball would solve that problem.

footballs a simple game, except the offside rule, it needs simple answers chips in balls could go wrong, the game is a game of opinions so it should only be officials who make decisions without breaking the continuity of the game.using tv technology is the only way forward for this or goaline officials.personally i would prefer tv technology and if the 4th official is unsure then the referees first decision is final.

I thought the Hawkeye trials had proved to work ok.
No problem with them introducing that for goal line calls if its working properly.

Not read the whole thread so hope I'm not repeating what's alrerady been said.

FIFA are completely anti technology.

Can't remember where I heard (or think I heard) it, but the FA were prepared to trial it, but were told in no uncertain terms by FIFA that they were not permitted to do so.

And FIFA are absolutely right
(apart from goalline technology. They should give that a whirl).

i dont know, i saw a illustration in the paper that suggested the chip is suspended in the centre by spoke like supports. personally i think its over complex anyway.

simple cameras on the line is all thats required, with a bit of image recognition software, doesnt even need anyone to watch it.

I can't understand why there are so many calls for video technology. Goalline technology is instant - video technology may only take a few seconds, but it breaks up the game. One think worth remembering is the in Rugby video technology is only used in tryline decisions, which means that play will have already stopped.

I'm with Easy on this, goalline tehnology is a must. Video technology, in my opinion, would break up the fluidity of the game.
