There may be more skill in playing the stock market than say the roulette wheel or even poker, but what's an indisputable FACT is that it's a gamble. And you saying it isn't is no different from a poker player saying that it's a game of skill in which they don't truly gamble.

If it's such a sure thing, put your house on it. After all you can't lose. And out of interest why haven't you made more of these 'calculated investments' and made millions? Why doesn't everyone?

I wish you the best, but please just admit that you can't get all high and mighty about gambling when you're advocating doing it here.

The main thing about playing the stock market is that you're not going to lose your entire stake unless you're completely moronic or the unluckiest man to ever walk the face of the earth. You'll just lose a bit of your stake, or make a bit on top of it. With gambling it's just shit or bust. The rates of return are obviously much higher, but so are the chances of losing your entire stake. And roulette seems to me to be the dumbest thing in the world.

I am not putting any money on the stock market. Have you noticed we have been plummeting since China's worst day of trading a month ago?:shootself :shootself

Although you apparently bet £25 quid on that sure thing of Spurs scoring first against Chelsea in the FA Cup replay...

A point you can see but has clearly gone way over the heads of others..............

Cairn Energy, a tried and trusted SCOTTISH oil exploration company are a good medium term tip. Shared have been as high as 25 quid recently but are now languishing around 15-16. They've got a shitload of oil in India due to come onstream in the next two years and stand a very good chance of being bought up by a mega-oil company before then. Oh, and if you buy shares before I think the 29th of this month, you get a three quid dividend paid out the following week. If I read the bumf correctly.

Could be a good call, price fell significantly as the result of a poor flotation of its Indian subsidiary and pipeline problems in India, but may now be on its way back up:-

Cairn Energy chart

23.03.07 :+28, (1630) Credit Suisse said that while it sees value in Cairn Energy PLC, it believes the remainder of the sector offers little value. Credit Suisse reiterated its ’outperform’ rating on Cairn Energy with an increased target price of 2,150 pence, up from 2,025, and retained its ’underperform’ stance on Tullow Oil PLC with an increased target price of 410 pence, up from 330

And a point you clearly failed to make. THPP is right of course, that is another thing in favour playing the markets vs (say) the roulette wheel. But this doesn't mean it's still not gambling does it? You don't know whether you will lose a lot, lose a little, gain a little or gain a lot, do you? You think you'll definetely gain, just as I thought I'd gain when I bet on Manchester United to beat West Ham earlier in the season. But I didn't. It happens. What part of your stock market dabbling is any different from when I had a tenner and lost a fiver of it on that ManU bet?

Feel free to answer instead of waiting for someone to contribute before labelling them right and everyone else wrong.

But they are both a gamble in a sense though, one is just safer than the other. But isn't life a gamble in itself. Isn't it, wasn't it, is it? I don't know anymore.

No it is investment with a calculated return if you get it right spectacular.

Poker etc is a gamble.

"Simple"?

How? Although the risk varies, there's a definite element of chance in investing. Unless you know of a totally risk-free investment - which would be a first.

But there is an element of risk in nearly everything. Is everything gambling?

At best you're just, once again, displaying your complete misunderstanding of gambling Beach Hut. At worst you are just spouting shite of the highest order. Again.

Just like an 'investor', a good gambler will be looking for value when he parts with cash. You know you won't be proven to be correct on every occasion, but you know if you prove to be a good judge of value then you will succeed, and profit, in the long run.

As discussed on here many times, I certainly have a penchant for gambling. The biggest gambles I have ever taken would be, it seems, described by you as an 'investment'. I'd still call them gambles.

Oh, and a nice bit of after-timing being displayed here too. Tell you what, I invested in a stock on Friday but I'm not going to tell anyone what it is. But I'll come back in a years time and let you know then. And I tell you what - I reckon they'll have done very well indeed...

The biggest gambling I do is moving my cash between building societies. Abbey, Alliance, Sussex County, Leeds, etc. All have paid me a nice bonus when they have become banks or been taken over. At present my money is in the Portman which should be swallowed up by the Nationwide shortly. Easy money.

As someone above requested - can you supply a reasonsed response, or are you going to have to wait for someone else to chip in and then reply "what he said" ?

I think we both know, don't we.

Really Bozza you do amaze me me, as I said a calculated investment as opposed to some nag or a wheel spin.

Aren't the talking about a £200 'windfall' to Portman holders? That's unlikely to represent a spectacular return on your investement unless your investment is very small.

You really don't understand at all, so please just shut up.

Proper gambling (sports gambling not casino gambling) is about looking for value. So, in most cases, is the 'investing' of which you speak.

And, as above, I speak from a position of considerable involvement in both.
