Very sad. :( Eastbourne would not be same if they don't restore it.

I remember at age 10 me and a mate would spend many of our days in our school summer holidays meeting up and walking to piers and spend what felt like the whole day on a £1

All classic machines.

Paperboy with handlebars
Commando
Star bike (laser disc)
Super sprint
Star Wars (cabinet)
Tron disc throwing
Combat school
And Penny drops (when we got close to running out of coins, little nudge here and there)

Happy times in eastbourne .....still a shxt town ;)

Given the intensity and the duration of the fire I'd be surprised if the damage is superficial. The tops of the iron supports and associated fixings will have been subjected to massive radiated heat - well in excess of 1000 degrees - followed by rapid cooling from the fire hoses. It may well be that many of the supports in the area affected by the fire will need to be replaced.

Will it have been hot enough to melt coins or is it still worth a trip underneath it tomorrow morning ?

Still lots of it left though, it is superficial not structural damage and the building looks fairly simple to reconstruct.

Looks a bit like a scaled down Hindenburg disaster.

I'm just worried that the pier will be closed off for quite a while and while they are debating who owns it/who repairs it/what future plans there are, someone or an act of God starts another fire to finish it off.

Please give an Outstanding welcome to those FIREMAN who stood by and watched. Any chance of tackling the fire instead of ''damping down'' ?

Yep, I guess I can see your point, but it looks like it will be simple to clear the deck so it can be used to get to the sea end. It may take years to rebuild what was lost but it should be usable, unlike the West Pier that was structually unsafe since 1975 and left to rot.

Thinking about it, it does make me wonder if the West Pier hadn't of caught fire, twice, whether they would have got around to saving it anyway, and what state it would be in now.

Nice to see Smug Cameron in Eastbourne dishing out £2m. Don't remember him coming to Hastings laden down with cash when ours burnt down. Election next year by any chance?

As blue as I am I heard about this earlier and was annoyed to hear about it after the lack of money available for Hastings pier
