[Sussex] East Sussex - Where is nice to live?

Afternoon all,

Requesting a wee bit of advice please. I am looking at a new job based in Eastboune and my Mrs might be also be moving jobs to Brighton. We live near Arundel at the moment as this is convenient for her and my current employment. If all goes well and we get the new jobs I think the commute will start to grind after a wee while so was looking at where in the surrounding area might be worth looking at moving to.

Ideally within 30 min drive of Eastbourne and up to 40 mins train to Brighton. Village location preferably close to good dog walks, school for my little badgers. Any advice of where is nice and where to avoid is welcome.

We moved to Seaford from Horsham 3 years ago and have been delighted to have done so. Easy access to Eastbourne (will be better when they widen Cuckmere Bridge) and great train service when Southern are working. Fantastic walks for dogs all over Seaford Head/Tide Mills and more, and the 'prom' is great for walking/cycling. Unsure about schools but they are here and seem reasonable. Town centre isn't up to much but Morrisons in centre and Sainsburys 3 miles are both close and all the shopping anyone needs in Brighton and Eastbourne. Pubs are good and some lovely country ones within 10 min's. 2 good golf courses if that's your fancy. 20 minutes to the Amex!!

Falmer used to be beautiful but was ruined when a monstrous sports stadium was built there turning in into a ghetto.

Willingdon. 10 mins to Eastbourne. Close to Polegate Station with direct line to Brighton. (Free travel from Polegate to home games).
Good schools close by and local shops. Next to the Downs so easy access for dog walks and two great pubs in Willingdon Village

A lot depends on your budget and his big a house you want. You will pay a considerable premium to live in a village in these parts.

I am a native of Crowborough and yes, it is a nice place, however, (and it pains me to say it) apart from that it has no night-life to speak of, so you will find yourself travelling to the likes of Tunbridge Wells for a night out. Crowborough's High Street has lost a lot of it's vibrancy from a few years ago. People call it the 'bedroom of Sussex' as most people just sleep there while working and socialising elsewhere.

I now live in Uckfield, which benefits from having a great independent Cinema, selection of good restaurants, great schools and a vibrant community feel. There are plenty of small villages/hamlets around the town, such as Buxted, Piltdown, Isfield & Halland that are all attractive places in my opinion.

Sums it up nicely, Crowborough has a splendid selection of supermarkets (Lidl, Morrison, Waitrose and Tesco plus "mini" Sainsbury and M & S) but the town centre is otherwise uninspiring. Never spotted any celebrities though.

Uckfield is good and you can get draught Harvey's from the off licence at the top of the High St and the Cinema is in my view magnificent. Shame about the (lack of) rail link coastwards, which applies equally to both towns.

Seaford has a kind of villagey feel and quite a strong community spirit. We moved here to bring up our kids and didn't regret it for a minute.

School is excellent (ask Ofsted) and surrounding countryside is lovely.

I think perhaps your final point is the most salient one.

Robertsbridge is nice has a mainline train station, steam railway, three pubs, a superb Indian restaurant, hardware/country store, two flower shops and a book shop.

Primary school
Secondary school (good school and the smallest in whole of Sussex so good class sizes)

25 mins Eastbourne 40 mins Brighton.

Not bad for a small village

Lovely place but no way are you getting from Robertsbridge to Brighton in 40mins! Well over an hour on a good run.

Ageree to this, that Robertsbridge is definitely worth a punt.

I echo these sentiments, up until January last year I was lucky enough to work in Robertsbridge (at the secondary school infact).

It's also base of cricket bat/wear manufacturer Gray-Nicolls and home to a former Dr Who in Tom Baker (who I once let go infront of me in the queue at the local shop).

Cooden Beach area of Bexhill is rather nice too.

The only place in Bexhill that is!

Stone Cross is quite nice, avoid Langney at all costs, another Jeremy Kyle breeding centre!

Yes, unusually a Wetherspoons pub in a former pub, the Crowborough Cross which has a stunning view over the Cross traffic lights themselves and the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle statue. It is a perfectly civilised Wetherspoons during the day, not been in during the evening. Also a splendid Harveys pub, the Wheatsheaf, at the station end of town.

if it's village life you're after, got to be Whitehawk or Moulsecoombe.................................

Lewes (Prison, Earwig Corner, Culfail Tunnel, Ashcombe & Southerham roundabouts) is all hellish in both rush hours. Often travelling in the opposite direction to the masses, daily I see hundreds of cars with very fed up looking drivers, stuck in jams. Similarly, Polegate to Ashcombe Roundabout is painful, for just a few miles of road.

If I was the OP, I'd locate nearer the Brighton part of his search zone, so he doesn't get caught up daily with the 10,000's heading to Brighton to work. The drive east to Eastbourne for work is far quicker, due to a lack of traffic heading that way.

Glynde,, Firle, Ripe, Berwick, Alfriston,
If you use train to and from eastbourne and brighton then Glynde and Berwick are easy access to train station makes them advantageous.
Pubs - Firle has 1 quite nice little pricy
Alfriston has them by the plenty.
Berwick has the Berwick pub. Not been for a while so couldn’t really comment.
Ripe has a couple of really nice pubs.
All have good access to countryside as well as the main roads.
Suppose all depends what is most important things for you as well such as schools ect
