After all the counting is finished ...

Hastings Borough Council is now made up of 24 Labour councillors and 8 Conservatives.

Labour gained one seat from the Conservatives, UKIP lost its only seat to the Conservatives.

As a tiny group in the European Parliament, how exactly will their representatives make any difference to decisions about our lives?

Which would suggest, given UKIP had the second highest number of MEPs of the British parties, that Britain's MEPs as a whole have little influence over the European Parliament.

Yeah, down with the working time directive!
You mean that directive that prevents people who actually want to do more hours from doing so ? Thankfully Britain has an opt out and I've yet to work anywhere where your contract doesn't automatically sign you out anyway ( which I've always been happy to do ).

That's what folk around these parts thought last year. And then UKIP won the County Council seat. But the quality of the candidates that they put up leaves a lot to be desired. The disgruntled bloke down the pub doesn't suddenly turn into a wise local councillor with the skills to manage a budget of hundreds of millions of pounds.

bullseye. here we have exactly the reason why UKIP do well, LB. thats exactly what democracy is all about. We have chancellors in charge of a trillion dollar economy who are generally spectacularly unqualified, if you genuinely wanted the best person for that job, but we vote them in every general election.

you dont like UKIP fair enough, but its clutching at straws to say that. pretty much everyone in local politics is a keen amateur. you cant discount them just because they arent from the political team you support.

I'm no friend of UKIP but this thread is hilarious. Just reading Lord Bracknell's spin and complete denial of what happened yesterday has put a huge smile on my face.

Are you really singling out just UKIP for having local people not experienced in local government? Clutching at straws there, LB.

Basically the working man can't be trusted to vote for the right party, nor can he be trusted to run things properly. Leave it to the Guardian readers. They know best.

What democracy? Regardless of the party in power, all cabinets are run by public schoolboys for the benefit of public schoolboys. There is no actual choice at all just the same people wearing different colour rosettes.

The left hate democracy.

It's funny how all these councillors are suddenly too inexperienced and the voters all thick racists when they're voting for a party that the Left hates. I didn't hear too many complaints when they voted enough masse for the other parties previously.

Seriously, though how patrician, how undemocratic have you got to be to criticise a bloke standing for local office on the basis that he hasn't had much experience?

How can so many people vote for UKIP in a country that overwhelmingly supports and wants to hang on to the NHS, makes no sense to me, their voucher system would end a massive percentage of funding

Good! as far as people cheating the benefit systems etc etc, (only read as far as your thread and have seen no more)

Whatever people think of this man, he tells the truth. It's been a dirty campaign against UKIP.

Unless, of course, they vote for Labour, then the great unwashed are lauded as "informed and enlightened, staying true to their political and social roots"
