Yes, presumably. And I really think it would be good practice to have travel insurance anyway, rather than risk it. The EHIC card is really only meant for emergencies; true, some hospitals will use this for their convenience, but it would be unwise to assume that all medical practices everywhere in the EU will want it for payment, and if you were desperate, you would really have little choice.

Most travel insurance has an excess, so why pay out when the card covers you? As I posted previously, even the small amount I had to pay, I could get refunded from Newcastle via my NI contributions.

I'm sorry but I find this a little hard to believe. Providing you carry your EHIC card [if your friend says it was an E111 it was more than 15 years ago!] and you, or someone with you tell the doctor who will attend with an ambulance crew that you wish to be treated under EHIC rules you will be taken to a public hospital. There you will receive the same treatment as a local. There are many private hospitals in Spain but all charges are regulated by the areas Junta, in my case the Junta de Andalucia. Charges are very reasonable, i.e. the maximum a specialist may charge per consultation is 125 euros., and an overnight in a private hospital nothing approaching what your friend says!

Just remember to have your free EHIC card in your wallet at all times, and here in Malaga picture proof of who you are because unscrupulous people without cover of any kind were were abusing the system. Now they require your in date EHIC card and passport or driving licence as proof of who you state you are.

This was 3 months ago. He was in a bad way so there were no discussions when he collapsed as to what paperwork he had with him. They were just pleased that an ambulances arrived. It was when the receptionist that night said are you sure you are covered for here as we have had problems before.

Thanks for advice folks. It's not actually for me. I am covered all round world through work but I am taking my father away for xmas/new year and just wanted to check whether i really needed extra insurance for him.

He always said if he dies while on holiday he hopes it's on the last day but don't bother paying to ship him home, just tip him into the sea. His words , not mine

My E101s for all countries in Europe are in already in place, should I require them and I dont really need my EHIC as any future employer normally provides private health care - Yours Faithfully, Chris

100% Unreliable source Ernest. - Cheryl nor Chris nor any of his family read any social media. I think his son used to be on Facebook but after a heavy defeat by Norwich to Man City a couple of years ago he closed his account because of some really bad abuse to him by Norwich fans.

Good point. But getting a stiff back home shouldn't cost too much? You could even use the original ticket if you die in time.

Its surprisingly expensive! Sealed casket, most low cost carriers don't do cargo of any description (Ryanair will carry coffins on Gatwick-Knock and no other service) so sometimes you need to transport it via a hub if there's no other direct flight.

We had the EHIC card and insurance in Menorca last year when my wife hurt her shoulder.

The only doctor in our resort (Santo Tomas) was in a private clinic. I mentioned that I had an EHIC card but they said I would already have to pay them, as they were private and, besides, I had insurance. so why not have the best for my wife?

I had to pay for a taxi to Citadella, where they gave her an x-ray and put her on a saline drip. We were flying home 3 days later but they insisted that we returned 2 days later for to see their consultant or we wouldn't get a certificate allowing us to fly home.

We went back two days later and the consultant confirmed (again) that nothing was broken. I asked about the travel certificate and let's just say that the confused look on the consultant's face would not have been out of place on a Spanish waiter in Fawlty Towers.

So I had to pay £100 (not euros) in excess, 80 euros in taxis and on the last day I was hit for an extra 80 euros for the initial consultation in the resort.

Obviously they milked the insurance for all they could. We were just unlucky.

To use a popular saying on here. "It wouldn't have happened in Germany".
