So people can't smoke real cigarettes as they have been outlawed across the land and now people can't smoke fake cigarettes that harm no one around them but still these people take offense to it, er, ok then.

It's not a case of taking offence, it's that bar staff, stewards and other employees end up having to police whether people and smoking genuine tabs or e-cigarettes, and it is a ballache to enforce.

Oh c'mon El Pres, I really dont care as I am non smoker as are my friends.

But how difficult can it be to distinguish between a fag and an e-cig and ultimately who really cares, certainly not your £5.00 an hour college kid who is struggling to pour a pint of Fosters..

I am sure a real cigarette would soon be challenged by its customers anyway.

Its an unlikely and unecssary hurdle for those wishing to give up and a little petty.

The Government has twigged that they are going to start losing 100's of millions in Tax duty if people switch to these things.

So they actually WANT people to smoke.

nail on the head
my Mrs has had one of these things for nearly a year
cheaper
cleaner
less smell
pure nicotine
no chemicals

George has taken a while to catch up with this one
Oh and she feels better

Why shouldnt people be able to smoke a LEGAL product that does others around them no harm whatsoever at a football match? In fact EVERY SINGLE other away ground I smoked mine at allowed it except at The Amex.

I didn't say they should be banned. The reason the Amex has stopped allowing them is because people were smoking real fags during games and when stewards came over they held up their electronic ones and pretended that they were using them.

Arrogant pricks! Ruin it for the good people as usual. My mate has just started an e-cig and loves it. As a non smoker I think they're great as then the smokers don't have to keep going outside and come in STINKING of fags. Yuk!

Schools are having trouble with these because kids can 'smoke' them undetected. The flip side of their benefits is that they could equally be 'starter cigarettes' and entice people into smoking. And even if they stay on the e-cigs, that's not great. Never smoked in my life and never wanted to but I'd actually consider trying one of these to see what the fuss is about..

They don't.

A full economic analysis has been done to work out the cost/benefit to the Treasury of cigarettes, and the cost to the NHS, sickness pay and benefits, lost working hours due to illness still outweigh the tax revenues from fags plus the pensions saved by smokers dying younger than non-smokers.

Interesting.........does it factor in the rising costs for the NHS treat increasing numbers of people with degenerative diseases? Either way the link would be good.

E-cigs helped me quit fags after 25 years of heavy smoking. I switched directly from 20 a day (30 at the weekend) to huffing on pure nicotine without the smoke/tar/myriad of poisons. I KNOW I am a much healthier, positive and nicer person to be around. I like nicotine - let me smoke my e-cigs and I'll tolerate all the shitty habits other people have - stinky junk food/bad aftershave/bad personal hygiene/polluting private vehicles/foul language/alcoholism/right wing diatribe/Burberry caps/bad tattoos -tax that shit.

Economically, yes. The amount of VAT, duty and other tax receipts they get from alcohol and tobacco sales is incredible.

My worry is that if e-cigs are given to the NHS to provide prescriptions for will drive up prices...

If you do try them, make sure the one you're using is a very weak one. Many e-cigs have 25ml of nicotine worth. That's literally x10 more nicotine in the liquid than is found in a cigarette.

I don't get it - if they had e-cigs anyway why not just 'smoke' them until they could get back out of the ground? Not used one as I gave up before they were readily available but surely they must provide some sort of relief.

I'd be interested in a link to that analysis - revenue from tobacco for 2011/12, duty and VAT, was £12.1 billion according to HMRC - nearly 12% of the entire NHS budget without taking into account the other savings due to shorter life expectancy etc.

The highest estimate I've seen for the additional cost to the NHS from smoking related illnesses is £5 billion. A net gain to the treasury coffers of around £7 billion.
