Rained off
y Bruce Talbot »
The first day of Sussex's Championship match against Durham at the Riverside has been abandoned.
Umpires Peter Willey and Mike Harris made the decision 45 minutes before the scheduled start with large puddles already on the outfield.
Title-chasing Durham had gone to great lengths to protect the square, even borrowing a hot-air pitch protector from Premier League football club Sunderland to help cover their wickets.
But more rain last night meant the decision to call off the day's play already was little more than a formality.
There are high hopes of a start tomorrow with a dry forecast for today and the rest of the week.
