Batting looks like it's going to be the problem for the nth season running. What the **** does Yardy actually do???

Seems to be Wright’s decision going off interviews. He wants to play red ball cricket for another 5 years - for Sussex hopefully!

He spent the winter working on his long form game so would seem unlikely he would make the call off his own back. Or maybe he did make the call , having been told he wasn’t in the first team plans .
It’s not as if he’s been great over past few years but given lack of other options it seems crazy not to have given him a try this season.
It also seems crazy to load up on short form specialists , as we already have too many for a county of our size.
In other news, It was very very obvious we needed to recruit a batsmen over the summer . If Gillespie didn’t fancy wright , then Make that two batsmen. We didn’t recruit at all in that area - even though there was a budget for an overseas .
To that an end, we get a seam bowler. Why? We have loads. Aside from anything else , it’s forcing garton out of the club. Unlike many of the young batters whose places have been secured too easily , he and sakande haven’t had enough chances.
I know We did very well in the t20 last season but it felt like this was papering over the cracks.
Generally, I’m wondering : is there a master plan that Is not visible yet .....or have Gillespie / Andrew and whoever else completely lost it?

The fact that Wright did play in pre season indicates to me he’s had a change of heart and no longer fancies the longer game. I see no reason why the club would push him out given that no batsman were added in the summer. Perhaps they feel the younger batsman (especially Salt and Haines) can step up, they both averaged 30 last season. SVZ missed the majority of last season through injury too. That squad of players (with Wright included) is certainly good enough for County Cricket.

As for the bowling front, I’m disappointed Garton hasn’t been given an opportunity (yet). He’s even scored 2nd XI runs! But, bowling is a squad game. There will be injuries and it’s fairly obvious we won’t see much of Archer this summer. Possibly Jordan too as part of the England ODI set-up. Playing devils advocate, Hamza is a very good player who averages just 18 runs per wicket in his FC career. I agree though, Sussex needed a batsman instead of an extra bowler regardless to Wright’s decision... even if he didn’t make it.

144-3 at the close.

Did well to get some runs at the end against a tiring attack

It will be different in the morning, we're certain to lose a few early wickets

Plenty of time left to snatch a defeat from a sure fire victory

To lose this game would require a capitulation of Albion proportions

The Albion and Sussex rarely do well on the same day... it's the law of averages [emoji23]

(When we won the Gillette Cup did we beat Millwall...?)
