I always draw people’s attention to pure athletic results when this argument arises about comparing athletes from different eras.
Jesse Owens would not get out of a heat at a major championships nowadays. He would be trounced by Christian Coleman. This we know because of recordable timings then and now.
You can be the best in your era and no more.
Same applies to football.

I watched an interesting discussion on how Owens matched up against Bolt when considering the track and equipment available at the time.
Owens ran on a cinder track and had no starting blocks, this is a massive disadvantage when comparing timings alone.

There is apparently a way of measuring the mechanics of the running style and, according to the vid, the difference between the two runners was not as much as you would think.(Bolt still won though)

I cant believe we would sell Dunk midseason! I can imagine him going in August but now would be madness! Burn out injured and Dunk gone would leave us with Duffy, Webster and Balogun wouldn't it? We would have to either sign a replacement or somehow get White back which doesn't seem likely. I know its 50million but seems way to a big a risk now....

If, and it is a big if, we can recall white, then perhaps I see the sense in this. However if I were Dunk I would have my bags packed now!

At the end of the day a club like Chelsea are miles away from us and he is not getting any younger. He has no meaningful trophy’s in his cabinet apart from lower league ones and going to Chelsea gives him a chance at champions league level and also premier league and FA/ League Cups. Chelsea are in the game to win things and set teams up to win things...we are in the game to survive in the premier!

It’s a no brainier for him really.

For us, we have Webster and duffy, balogun and Bernardo as central defenders and bringing back white, who is untried at prem level of course, is a gamble. 50 million would go to paying for the training complex basically and who wouldn’t begrudge bloom wanting some return. But assuming he doesn’t then that would buy us a decent striker and Mooy!

All valid points. If Owens were to have beaten bolt he might have had to given up smoking. He was a heavy smoker and died of lung cancer.

I'd agree - if we can get silly money, and have at least adequate cover (100% need to recall white, particularly with BDB injured) and, most crucially, Dunky WANTS to go, then it'd be wrong to stand in his way. He's at the age where if he's going to play for a top club it needs to be very soon. He'd near-double his wages at Chelsea I suspect, as well as picking up a signing on fee of several million. He deserves that chance.

I was under that either we couldn't recall White or it had already been discounted as a possibilty. In any event is he really an adequate replacement for Dunk? I know he is being touted as future England and supposedly being looked at by Liverpool etc but would he still would be a risk for me and in any case would he go straight into a big premier league team if signed. I doubt it, whereas we would need him to be up to speed straight away.

I do accept that If Dunk wants to go and the price is right then we shouldn't stand in his way but why could this not be in the close season?

Some northern paper bangs on that we can't recall White, but Potter said we could.

Of course, he was a handy long jumper as well, winning the Gold in Berlin.
Anyway, you can't realistically compare athletic achievements across the years, for all the obvious reasons.

Yes a fantastic record. Why this is overlooked by some who should know better is beyond me. 25 goals in the 2nd Division was no guarantee of 25 in the first. He was class.

Wardy was brilliant.
As well as the 16 league goals he must have scored another couple in the cups as he ended with 18, and he didn't take many penalties, if any, as this was usually down to Nobby Horton.

Except that we're mid-season and 3 points off the relegation places. Dunk's legacy will be tainted if we get relegated. The club has to come before the player. When we're safe he can leave in the summer with everyone's blessing.

You have to be realistic if Chelsea come in (IF) and offer 50m, Dunk will probably want to leave and player power is very important. Even if we don’t want to sell, if you’re offered that money and the player wants to leave is it wise to stop him leaving?

Tough one.

Sell him, with a half season loan back?

If he is going to get a move like this then it will have to be now or in the summer latest in my opinion.

Confident he will stay in Jan personally

If they chuck Olivier Giroud in on top of the £50M (he's being allowed to leave) they've got a deal :lolol:

So, have Chelsea made an offer which meets our valuation? I assume not at this stage. If they do, then I expect a conversation concerning if it could be deferred until the end of the season. I don't think Chelsea are in desperate need to buy a CB, whereas our need for Dunk to help us stay up is pretty vital. Also, would give us time to negotiate a deal for one of their young defenders as a partial exchange.eg you give us Reece James and £25m and it's a done deal.
I don't think Lewis will be with us next season but we'll have White back then, Webster will have a full years experience in the EPL and we could get some young talented player in from Chelsea.

Or that defender at Derby that's been getting rave reviews... you know the ex Portsmouth one.

Reece James just signed a 5.5 year deal at Chelsea. He's going nowhere

Is he still getting rave reviews? I’ve not heard much since his opening 2 games tbh...
