I always draw people’s attention to pure athletic results when this argument arises about comparing athletes from different eras.
Jesse Owens would not get out of a heat at a major championships nowadays. He would be trounced by Christian Coleman. This we know because of recordable timings then and now.
You can be the best in your era and no more.
Same applies to football.
I watched an interesting discussion on how Owens matched up against Bolt when considering the track and equipment available at the time.
Owens ran on a cinder track and had no starting blocks, this is a massive disadvantage when comparing timings alone.
There is apparently a way of measuring the mechanics of the running style and, according to the vid, the difference between the two runners was not as much as you would think.(Bolt still won though)
