If he had refused to play at Southend and fined 2 weeks wages, why would he be on the bench for free? If you are going to be fined for refusing to play you wouldn't make yourself available. In effect he would have been fined because NSC said that he was refusing to play?

Fine. Shame if true. But Dunk not playing on Saturday is hardly evidence of that.
Perhaps things were reconciled - up to a point - during the rest of the week. I don't know. And being fined 2 weeks wages doesn't automatically exclude you from being in the next squad does it.
All I'm saying is that I have no reason to believe that what I was told at the time about him refusing to play, and being fined for it, was a work of fiction. And nothing that's happened since then has either categorically proved or disproved it. It just boils down to what you choose to believe.
