i have tried to watch it twice but kept getting interrupted ...so got up at 4 a.m today , glass of cab merlot and a spliff and watched it uninterrupted .....i'd give it a solid 7.5 , gadgets and flying things top notch , effects great and Timothee is to die for , if youre a fan then look out for a film called KING where he plays the title roll , Joel Edgerton is great in it.

i have to admit that Timothee is part of the attraction for me too!
I am waiting till i'm home alone, (Mr Nickbrighton doesnt like this type of film)can pull the blackout blind down, whack the volume up and see it uninterrupted

Have you been watching "Foundation" -I am two episodes in- jury is out at the moment

I will look out for "King" -thank you

Leeds - but not the dirty bit
In response to GOM, do you not think that with the advent of twitter, tic tok, facebook, and all the rest that a lot of people (especially younger people) are now used to having shorter attention spans. News for example is now presented in "bite sized " pieces, soundbites, and short clips. People are on their phones every few mins, whilst doing other things. Im not saying people cant sit and watch a 3 hour movie without loosing interest, Im saying that a lot of people are now used to not doing so. There was a whole streaming service whose entire premise was to present TV series in 5-10 minute episodes purely for that reason (Quibi) some great shows but designed to be consumed in very short segments

This discussion has gone of on a tangent somewhat, and I am sorry if my original post wasn't clear in what I was saying. I think we now understand what we each mean-

I do agree re social media and I don't consider it news on those mediums either.

and apologies in advance, the pedant in me couldn't help but highlight your unfortunate use of 'loosing'.

OMG loosiing the plot or what?

Re News- I find it difficult to find any decent in-depth news reporting on any main stream channel these days. An In-Depth report on a BBC news bulletin used to be 10 mins long-now lucky to find anything more than a couple of mins.

The advent of rolling news constantly repeated every 15 mins or so is killing proper reporting

I recall a comment from John Simpson in the first gulf war saying that in previous conflicts if they heard a rumour or got a lead on something he and a cameraperson would go out and investigate, come back put a report together, but now that he has to give live updates a 3 or 4 times an hour they simply couldn't follow the story properly

Instead of enhancing news reporting 24 hour news channels have done the exact opposite

Saw the movie last night. Has often been said that Dune was too complex for a screen adaptation. It looks like they haven't tried to adapted it much and seems quite faithful to the book.
So, 2.5 hours in we're about half-way through the book plot and just about to get interesting when it ends.

Given that the main story is a trilogy of books (plus 3 more set about 3000 years after the first trilogy) it's going to be a long haul but I think it will be worth it.
I thought it was brilliant, but unsure if someone not familiar with the story would say the same given where the story ends.

King was indeed superb, had no expectations going into it and was pleasantly surprised. He was also excellent in Call me by my Name.

I watched it today at the IMAX screen in Crawley.

Visually stunning, the soundtrack is very other worldly. Really enjoyed it.

As someone who hasn't read the books i found it OK to follow, and a very engaging story.

Can't wait for part 2.

Hither (sometimes Thither)
So i saw it last eve, and by beatable bongo it's eye-meltingly attractive. Endlessly beautiful and transfixing, and ear-slappingly booming, but only marred a little by the dreary-faced Timothee Chalamet, action-dumbass Jason Momoa, and some of the backing track part-stolen from Crocodile Dundee. It took itself a bit too seriously, but quite a film to be confronted with colour-wise. Disney Tarkovsky.

I read some of the books as a young SF fan in the 70's and 80's, my comprehension of the complexities of the tale slowly waned til i just gave up. I probably won't live to see the end of the film interpretations so I probably won't bother. The first book is fairly straight forward but believe me it gets so bloody complicated by books 3-4 !

Well I watched it last night, and thoroughly enjoyed it. The two and a half hours flew by. I watched with someone who had no idea of the story previously and he enjoyed and kept up.

I found I recalled more of the plot than I thought I would. and I couldnt see to many variences from my recollection

It certainly is visually stunning and doesn't appear to take liberties with the source material. Bit disappointed we didn't see more of the guild navigators and interstellar travel

As has been said by others, the foundation has now been set and it all starts to get going from the end point on.

Hope it doesn't take to long to get film two into production.

I cant recall seeing Tomothee before, nice eye candy and a good performance, I will look out for King

He's pleased with that review:

Visually it's beautiful, the soundtrack is imposing and impressive and the acting is fine. The story wasn't anything particularly different or intriguing. It's Lord of the Rings in space in many ways, with a dash of Game of Thrones thrown in. Usual kind of fodder really, there didn't seem to be anything particularly original about it.

Ultimately, I think that if they get to make however many films they need to in order to tell the whole story, you can judge the series in its full context. We've got the first part, which stands alone fine but if they're really able to get into the story they want to tell you can fairly judge the narrative as a whole.

Dont forget this was written in the early 1960s, and in the same way LOTR influenced much fantasy writing after, Dune did the same for Sci-Fi. Many of the themes and ideas in Dune became standard baseline material for much that followed. This was different and intriguing, the fact that much of it seems familiar is because it has been copied and its themes used multiple times since in the same way much Fantasy writing has followed the LOTR route.

I think you are right that this will only really be able to be judged as a whole, rather than after the first part of the first book. I expect the second part to be made as the film looks set to go into profit as its box office goes past $250 million on a budget of about $170 Million

Whether the other books will ever be filmed remains to be seen, maybe it could transfer to the small screen to complete the rest of it as the box office is certainly no where near that required for a Star Wars type franchise

Not quite sure about the LOTR in space,

Not quite sure about the LOTR in space,

It doesn't matter when it was written, it is the story it is and the film is what it is. Which is what I described based on my experience of watching it. I'm not really into LOTR, Star Wars and the type - so I'm not the target market at all and I was perfectly well aware of that going in. I would imagine they'll make this at least a trilogy to try and tell their story. Ultimately, it was entertaining and what more can you ask for?

Of course it matters when it was written if you are commentating on its originality, its like saying LOTR wasn't original as it copied the Nazgul from the Dementors in Harry Potter, or Gandalf is loosely based on Dumbledoor despite being written half a century (ish) earlier rather than the other way round. Especially with this film, context is everything

If you aren't into LOTR then its difficult to see how you can say its LOTR in space-there is almost no similarities between the story , characters , setting, pacing, sub plots or anything

I agree the main thing is whether it is enjoyable, thought provoking, escapist or whatever your particular reason for seeing it is. If it fulfils the reason you went to see it, then its a good film

There are only two films planned (The first book) with film two apparently ready to go as soon as the studio authorises it. Whether or not there are options on the second and third books in the original trilogy has not been announced.

But even the production on Part 2 hasn't been green lit yet, and is dependent upon the box office take from this film. There is still a chance we never see the continuation, which would be awful.

Therefore, I need to see it again!
