I think Duffy would work as the central defender in a 3, with the remit to just make short passes, Dunk would probably give us more on the right of a 3 anyway. I will love it if Potter can make him work in whatever formation, his aerial ability is probably only bettered by the giant Van Dyke in the PL. In games where we are facing a lump like Michel Antonio or Lukaku, or sides with a good tall striker like Calvert Lewin, he is a must.

I think one thing we can all agree on is that GP mixes it up. I hope Duffy gets enough game time but I confess when he went to Celtic and had that horrendous dip in form that I never expected to see him pull on an Albion shirt again. I get the impression that GP is getting more pragmatic with PL experience.

If we can get just a couple of players over the line I think we could have the type of season we could only dream of just a couple of years ago and I hope Duffy is involved, but no guarantees as even the big man accepts. The fact that GP and the players seems to be building up his confidence again is great to see imo. This is a special club

Quite right. You don't need all three defenders to stride into midfield or hit long passes. As long as he's not coughing up possession in dangerous areas that's good enough for a year or so while our academy defenders develop on loan.

Shane Duffy needs to play like Shane Duffy, not Ben White. And he's self aware enough to do so.

Perhaps with Duffy in the back 3 we can finally let Dunk lose and see what he can do with more freedom to push a bit further forward more often.

We shouldn't forget how good of a passer he can be.

Duffy praising the club and in particular Potter in the press since Burnley, Potter expressing how good Duffy was on Saturday and how he has helped the team since his return. What does this all mean? Its basically Albions way of making sure Edouard reduces his wage demands and sings up asap.

I'm confident in my ability, I can play out as well, I might not be Franz Beckenbauer running out, but not many are.

100% this....if he does that then he's well worth his place in the squad. Light years ahead of White (and virtually any other CB) in the air, too so we're stronger from that perspective. .

Duffy struggled a bit in his first season under Potter at playing the ball out from the back but I think was overemphasized. The team was still learning to play that way as well. Hopefully with a better understanding by the team as a while of whole it should be less of an issue. It's not just an issue of calm, confident on the ball centre backs but the right shape as a team and people getting in to right position to receive a pass. That has improved for us over the last two seasons

I'd love to fear Duffy will be excellent and a core part of the squad all season but I fear those mistakes with passes out. If we can not overly expose that part of his game though he can be great.
