We will only ever react post tragedy. It’s the way we as a species work. If you asked all of those stranded in the airport now if they’re happy to pay more tax to prevent this sort of thing many more would say yes. ...

why is it always assumed "more money" will fix every little problem?

and therein lies the problem that has been ignored for years. It doesn't need a vivid imagination to understand the immense disruption these things can cause. Next time at the Amex and some nutjob sends one over, what then?

I dunno about "how shit we are", the reality is very little can be done. We'll eventually get geofencing at airports, then we'll need train stations, then, then, then

Sales of these things should have been restricted from the start, although their mere existance is probably enough to make them the favoured tool of extremists, loonies and chancers for the foreseeable

i understand there already is geo-fensing at airports and other areas. trouble is you need the device to have GPS turned on for that to work so its somewhat voluntary. dont know what the solution is here, its one of those seems simple but isnt problems. strong licencing which would only reduce the access somewhat, someone determined could bypass that easily. technology for jamming runs up against international law. perhaps detection methods in form of sensitive directional detectors would help but only reactive.

Can see Planes starting to come in.

hopefully this mess will be over soon.

We have planes that are meant to be leaving LGW departing form LHR today, still at least people are getting away.

Flights resumed but limited service.

Surely if it has explosives, it would be better to shoot it when it's well clear of people, than let the pilot detonate it at a time and location of their choosing?

Not if it’s close enough to a plane that the explosion could cause a chain reaction of explosions.

When you have a government which routinely starves the country of vital funds, “more money” is usually a good starting point.

Take two in the lounge, now off to Heathrow instead. It's been a mild inconvenience for me, one extra night at the in-laws. I really feel for people truly affected by this though. Hope whoever caused this is brought to (sorry tough) justice.

Oh, and it's still not socially acceptable to drink at this time in the eyes of my cultured Mediterranean hosts.

We need more updates from NSCers living this nightmare at Gatwick

Who has given up and gone home, who has been waiting the longest, who has been diverted to Edinburgh/Birmingham/Amsterdam etc. Who is supposed to flying today but been bumped for yesterday’s passengers? Who has been told not to bother checking in etc etc.

Oh right, even worse than I thought then. The chaos that can be unleashed with these things has no limits and seemingly pretty well undetectable. There really doesn't appear to be an answer.

In the meantime Amazon and specialist retailers are filling their boots .... we get what we deserve perhaps?

I really feel for the one true victim in all of this.

He's worked bloody hard since September.
Nobody deserves a month in the sun more than him.

I guess the tourists who did this are already out of the country enjoying a well earned vodka.

Some harsh criticism aimed at the government over dronegate saying inadequate preparation, legislation in place etc.

In all fairness they've been very busy over the past 2 and half years.

And you won't find a finer transport secretary than Chris Grayling

so they haven't caught anyone and lots of crews now stood down .

Very strange all of this.

If what we are told is correct then I doubt this is the end of it

If it is a foreign power messing with us, then even if authorities know, announcing it to the world gives them the proaoganda victory and demands some sort of reaction. Sweep it under the carpet and we can avoid a diplomatic incident for the time being, and deny them the propaganda victory of showing the world they can do what they like in the UK.

My son’s flight now put back until Sunday morning! Landing at Heathrow around 5am.

Jeeez. That’s cutting it fine for Xmas. Fingers crossed.

I’m not one for conspiracy theories but this does all seem a bit odd.
