Driving in the heat: windows open or air-con on?

Upto 40-50 MPH, windows open. Above that, my car reminds me to close the windows and switch on the air con as it's more economical.

Back in 96 when i got my first car (Renault Laguna) with Air con the spec sheet stated the Air con reduced the MPG by 8MPG from 40 to 32.
I guess the pumps have got more efficient since then, but do remember if travelling at speed, ie 70, when switching the Air con on you could feel the car slow.

These days i always use Air con but the wife has the windows open.
