What do people reckon is the quickest way? At the moment I'm thinking of going up through Croydon, Norwood, Dulwich and that but there is the other way where you go in from a bit further round the M25. Does anyone do this drive regularly and, if so, which way do YOU go?

xx

Cheers Wookie, my first port of call was the aa route finder, just wondering whether there was a quicker way as I'm sure I shouldn't have to go onto Coldharbour Lane like.

I havent driven it for a few years now but I used to come off at the A20 turn off on the M25 and go up from there - Sidcup by pass, Mottingham, Eltham, Lewisham and hey presto.

I never had any bother that way but then I was starting further round the M25 than you would come onto it.

That's the other way I'm thinking of doing it. Ahhhh balls, I'll go through Croydon, I don't spose it make any odds.

I sometimes travel that way and I'd say follow Wookiee's route but to cut out alot of traffic turn right at Streatham Common onto the A214 and then left onto the A215 and then follow this all the way up to the A202 and then turn right.

Although heading into New Cross is a much less painful drive along the A2 or A20 it is so far around the M25 it's not worth it.

Travelled to Brighton from Sidcup, Eltham and Lewisham, always travelled this way, in my view is definitely the quickest

Definately the best route!

As a former sarf east london resident, I can tell you that the quickest way is round the M25 to the A2 junction, then head into London from there.

Turn off the A2 at Blackheath, cross the Heath and down the hill down across Deptford Broadway, and then you are straight into the loveliness that is New Cross itself.

One hour 30 minutes tops on a clear run.

Just watch out for the speed cameras along the 50 MPH stretch especially the one literally hidden IN the wall!

Actually it's quite interesting you say that, because I always go in that way when travelling up the A21 from Hastings but from Brighton carry on into London along the A23. You actually think turning onto the M25 is quicker?

I've tried the A20 a couple of times it's just terrible traffic I've found at Sidcup.

Oooooooooh now I'm tempted to do that route. Any chance of some more detailed DIRECTIONS? All the route finders are shithouse for it.

edit: Especaily where to come off the M25 as I do believe I have once missed that exit.

edit2: bearing in mind I'm leaving Brighton at about 3:15 or so this afternoon....

Yes, Junction 2 of the M25 onto the A2. Just keep following signs for Central London, making sure you bear left staying on the A2 and not go through the Blackwall Tunnel.

If Im going from Brighton to the east side of London, ie the City, or east or south east London I always go M25/A2. It is the quickest by far.

For the west end or any points in west or south west London I turn off the M25 at the Reigate turn off. then go up the A217/ A24, ( which is mainly dual carriageway) or cut across up to the A3 Kingston by pass, then go over Putney or Hammesmith bridges.
