Seems to be socially acceptable to drink on the rail network, but on the bus you get funny looks from other passengers.

Ridiculous double standard if you ask me.

I'm pretty sure it is illegal on London buses, to either drink alcohol or carry it in a opened container.

They sell it on trains.

I\'m fairly sure it is illegal on Brighton Buses too as I have been not been allowed on a bus with an open bottle of bud before. These days it\'s better to get on then open it once your safely upstairs.

Eating and drinking should be banned on all buses, the underground, and commuter trains. It would make for a much nicer environment; it would make the bus/train smell better; and less litter.

Both are banned on the New York subway and it makes the subway a much more pleasant travelling environment.

It's already banned in London, except for New Year's Eve I think.

You should purchase a beer bottle with a resealable lid, ding ding for every stop, and jump off for a quick swig. Do it back up and leap back on. Maybe better with a small bottle of voddy.

It is in London - i dont think you can drink on any TFL services (Tube, Buses, DLR, Trams and maybe Overground). Think it works fine there.

Think a couple of train companies have brought full bans in too, remember reading that the main company in Scotland bans it after 8PM.

A couple of years back, the government carried out a consultation exercise on the possibility of changing the law relating to consuming alcohol on buses. They prepared something called an Impact Assessment. The proposals were looked at by an advisory body called The Regulatory Policy Committee, that came to the following conclusions:-

7. The Conduct Regulations set out the rules and responsibilities for bus and coach drivers, inspectors and conductors, and also for passengers, and there are potential criminal consequences for breaches of the conduct rules. The Impact Assessment notes that the conduct regulations may not be enforced by bus drivers and other problems have arisen that require regulatory change to the rules.

8. The areas sought to be changed are: smoking; wheelchairs; anti-social behaviour – alcohol; driver passenger relations (stopping and accelerating after bus stops); and extending conduct rules to other vehicles.

9. There is inadequate evidence presented in the Impact Assessment to demonstrate that regulatory change is required in the areas identified. Although reference is made to complaints received by DfT - for instance in respect of acceleration from bus stops, and prams in wheelchair spaces – the number, type and nature of these complaints is not set out. Some attempt has been made to present an evidence base for banning alcohol consumption on buses. However, no evidence is presented of the problem caused by people consuming alcohol on buses as opposed to drunken people boarding buses.

10.There is also little attempt to demonstrate how the proposed increased sanctions or revised rules would solve the problems identified. Fining operators where bus drivers allow anti-social behaviour (for instance alcohol consumption) on buses may not result in a reduction in anti-social behaviour, but may instead lead to other costs (bus drivers may become increasingly targeted for assaults etc).
In the case of prams in wheelchair spaces, it may be that the problem relates to space on buses (rather than bus driver behaviour) and consideration should be given to other methods of resolving the problem rather than fining operators. The Impact Assessment does not examine alternatives to the proposals presented and any costs or benefits associated with them.

As far as I'm aware, no progress has been made to change the law. It therefore comes down to the Conditions of Carriage set by each individual bus company - although there is a law in place that prohibits the consumption of alcohol on coaches travelling to designated sports events.

Trains don't go around sharp corners or break suddenly unlike buses which can be driven by grumpy and psychotic drivers, more likely to cause spillage.

Wouldn't be so bad if the dirty buggers learned how to use the bin at the front of the bus.
