We’ve come a long way since the dark days of 80s football. Why would anyone want to give up the comforts of modern football? Padded seats, half decent food and drink, warm concourses, toilets that don’t stink of piss, a coat rail etc etc.

Don't forget the umbrella stand in club livery.

We cannot be trusted not to throw beer around, so it’s a no from me. As others have said, comparisons with other sports are voided because of the vastly different cultures and classes. Let’s face it, and especially at some of our away games, more than a pinch of our tribe look like inebriated extras from the Night Kings army love ‘em as I do. Makes you proud but keep the drinking controlled downstairs or one day inevitably we will all be covered in beer and possibly worse.

I like the Amex-era approach of treating fans as adults. Shared outside area before the match. Concourses and Dick's Bar open to all after the game. Minimal police presence. It would be interesting to know what the doomsayers would have said about the presence of a shared outside area at the ground pre-match when in the planning phase.

Are you seriously entertaining the thought that those up the road could mingle freely in Dick's with BHA fans, sharing a banana daiquiri or two talking about days of yore?

No. I am not advocating any change in approach. The current approach of treating people like adults is working. Some teams that is not wise - so they don't. But they club don't say every game is like a Palace game and take the worst case scenario and request a big police presence for every home game.

I am not sure what you read tbh.

How is that any different from many other grounds ? There are ‘shared’ outside areas at both Anfield and Goodison, my local PL grounds.

The beer throwing around thing

Full disclosure. I've lobbed a good few pints around in my time as a result of goal based exuberance.

But every time it was in the middle of the summer and I had implied consent from everyone at the venue (ie, I was in the King and Queen).

Not a chance I would do it with kids and family around. And certainly not in the outside when football is mostly a sport played in the cold.

Not a chance I would do it at the prices Barber charges either

I think this is an overstated risk

Next you'll be saying they all get on the same trains / buses away from the ground.

TBF I agree with you. I'd be amazed if it's anything more than a tiny fraction of what we see at outdoor venues showing England games in the summer. (Even though some of the places showing England games charge more for beer than Sodexo do!) Still, even one or two pints being luzzed will be an unpleasant experience for those caught in the shower.

I think the poll option was worded poorly to only emphasise the 'beer shower' aspect, there's more to it than that. And forget beer being deliberately thrown, there will be inevitable accidental spillages, perhaps when we score or perhaps just because the person behind you is a clumsy drunken oaf. It will end up on people's clothes and cascade down the steps and between the seats. (Won't someone think of the cleaners!) At the very least you will have to put up with a massively increased level of up down up down up down as people either go to get more beer or empty their current load. It will generally be unpleasant, which is why I'm agin' it.

I dunno, I must be getting old and/or sensible and/or boring. A few years ago I'd have voted unquestionably for change.

It's not just pints being lobbed, but pints being spilled/kicked.

A few years ago at Wolves away, some guys behind us managed to somehow get some bottles of Heineken into the stand. When we scored, they spilled/kicked (on accident, i'm pretty sure) the beer all over me and the rest of the people in front of them.

What’s your point ?

It was a dry attempt at agreeing with you that the point the individual was making about mixed areas being something somehow unique to the Amex was, in fact, crap.

Sorry. I took it the wrong way. Yes, actually the Liverpool outside area is great. Looking forward to it in a few weeks. Much better range of food options than the Amex last time we visited. Also plenty of seating so you can eat and drink in comfort. Fans mixing, no problems. The Everton one is a bit of a poor man’s version. I told my Liverpool supporting plumber that story yesterday and he enjoyed the comparison.

I didn't say no-one else did it, or than fans don't mix in other areas. But a decade ago it was an unusual decision by the club to do these things. Treating people like adults. I remember PC Balkham telling the story of the Leeds fans arriving first time at Falmer station and standing waiting on the platform. When asked what they were doing they said they were waiting for the police escort. And post-match opening home concourses to away fans as well. I always thought we were the first.

Anyway - the point was we can treat fans like adults and not take as the example the bloke who sticks a flare up his arse.

What grown-up would ever want some muppet launching their piss-poor choice of cooking lager up in the air in their general vicinity - even if the natural reaction of any normal person IS to throw it away?

Man city didn't have a shared area much to my annoyance after a 7 hour coach trip.

Or not buy it in the first place.

Can some people really not last a couple of hours without fuelling their alcohol neediness?
