Drinking in Charlton?

We walked up the hill after the game, last season, and had a quick pint in the very 'home' Bugle Horn pub, near Charlton House. Ever so funny seeing the locals crying into their beer. Hopped onto a 53 after, and was home in ten minutes

I will be using The Anchor & Hope pub which is on the river bank, my daughter lives just 100 yards from it whilst at uni. 10 min walk to the ground and easy parking!

Used it last year and not bad.

Pay a small entrance fee and I seem to remeber the beer was quite cheap but nothing special in terms of choice. Large bar and quick service but not much atmosphere.

V close to the ground and a decent kebab/chippy

CHARLTON is shite for pubs. THE ANTIGALLICAN opposite the station is a cavernous away fans pub, but always rammed and takes ages to get served, it's a bit of a chavvy West Street kinda place if you like that sort of thing. THE ROYAL OAK is the main 'home' pub as the closest to the ground, but it's pants and often closed for several months at a time for 'refurbishment' (ie trying to find another mug landlord to take it over). THE LIBERAL CLUB is a school hall, costs a couple of quid on the door, but the beer's a bit cheaper than elsewhere. Never been in THE CONSERVATIVE CLUB, but I assume it's full of twats. THE BUGLE HORN & SWAN in Charlton village are nothing special, often home tickets only, and up a stupid bloody hill. THE ROSE OF DENMARK halfway between Westcombe Park and Charlton stations ain't too bad, probably the friendliest mixed pub, although it usually only lets in away fans before the game not after. Probably the closest actually proper nice pub to the ground is THE ANCHOR & HOPE on the river, about five mins walk North of Charlton train station.

Better bets are further afield. THE PILOT INN, a Fullers pub five mins walk (through a nice park with a fountain) South of North Greenwich tube, has a country pub feel, does good food, has Sky, nice multi-level beer garden, and you can always get a seat. It's a ten minute bus ride to the ground through a horrible swathe of B&Qs and Homebases though.

Blackheath has a few nice pubs, and GREENWICH has gabillions. The ones in Greenwich village and riverfront are touristy and wallet-raping in price. The better bet is the three pubs located in the back streets South of Greenwich station, all of which have nice beer gardens. These are THE ASHBURNHAM ARMS (Shepheard Neame) which has the biggest garden, THE RICHARD 1ST (Youngs) which is a traditional back street boozer, and adjacent to it, the trendy GREENWICH UNION (Meantime) which has all of the Meantime brewery's fancy lagers and porters, plus Dark Star Hophead and Harveys Best on handpump.

Or you could hang around London Bridge smelling Millwall fans' farts.

Good call re: Pilot Inn. Love that pub. And the terraces next door. It's a five minute walk from North Greenwich Station, but you can get the 472 and 161 buses to near the ground from there if you can't be arsed with the walk. Good food in there, too, last time I was there

Could and probably should be a good pub, but the service is always appaling, it's full of the worst kind of student, tourists and Greenwich p0nces these days.
