Yes. And I think that all clubs should have a supporters representation at or near board level with this in mind. As they squeeze money from individuals at every opportunity to do so, the combined revenue this generates should be respected accordingly

It's all Chinese whispers. I think the original rumours concerned a casino, which is gambling as opposed to excessive drinking.

Well if the casino rumours are true that makes it twice as bad, as l bet they got pissed whilst they were throwing their money way. Those two things tend to go together.

Yes, yes, no smoke without fire eh? Where are the photos? Everyone has a phone now, so it's easy to take a picture for social media. Even a back view taken craftily would do.

In Europe they can drink every day, responsibly, in small amounts and mostly with food.

In the Nordic countries you won't find them drinking mid-week, but they will get absolutely plastered on the weekend.

In the UK, we seem to have combined the two. We have a huge drinking culture - who out of all of us doesn't get pissed mid-week from time to time??

Not entirely true: not in Sweden at least. ‘After Work’ drinks are quite a common thing (most bars/pubs have special promotions between 5-7), not getting pissed but certainly a few beers

I disagree. The are professional athletes. The staff need to know their blood levels and contents so they can tailor/change their diet and check all sorts of other information. Why would you not? It would be negligent not to have all that data. They should be following strict instructions about what they eat and drink and when and how much they do down to the gram. Its their job!

Really? Did you miss Ben Stokes and Alex Hales being dropped from the England squad (Stokes for the second time)? Or Monty Panesar having his Sussex contract terminated? Or Jesse Ryder's repeated bans from the NZ squad? Or Ben Duckett's swift removal from the England squad? Or Andrew Symonds having his Australia career cut short? Or Andrew Flintoff being stripped of the England vice captaincy?

There is a bit more tolerance in rugby but even that's limited - just ask Danny Cipriani

I can certainly *guess* who the 3 are.

The club need to get on top of this and replace them all in the summer - whichever league we are.

It'll be an absolute disgrace if their boozing costs us our PL place.

That is the key. If these players were out drinking and gambling before Christmas, nobody seemed bothered. So, if it wasn't affecting their performance then, why is it now?

A little yes. I'm not talking about how the clubs deal with it, more peoples tolerance.. Its mostly cricket and rugby in this neck of the woods. I dont think anyone would pay much attention if they were out on the lash mid season

If they don't take that information how can they keep the players in peak condition? How can you monitor hormone, glucose etc levels over the season? These can give clues to fatigue and enable players be rested and have their diet changed. You wouldn't send a race car out on track without looking and monotoring the engine would you!?

We seem to be talking about different things. I said there is an ethical boundary between testing for things like “hormones, glucose” and outright testing for substance abuse. You are arguing about something else

They would be testing for substance abuse too. That is illegal and if caught the players would be banned. Why would the club let them? Also it reduces performance so they would test for it for that reason.

I don’t know what they’re testing for. As I said, a typical set of “health and performance” blood and urine tests don’t usually include drug and alcohol screening. And there is an ethical boundary when you cross from the former to the latter. As I said, my gut feeling is they don’t test for the latter. This is just my opinion. If your opinion is different then fine.
