Thankfully it is absolute balderdash to say that far right opinion is on the rise. In the 70/80s we had the National Front openly campaigning on the streets, then came the BNP.

What has happened is the left has moved further left, creating a wide chasm between themselves and those who do not support them. Now the left just throw insults of nazism, and labels of racism at those who have the temerity to have actually had parents/grandparents who fought and maybe died to stop Hitler. It seems that the left realise that their utopian ideal is not supported by the majority of the population. They resort to smearing anyone who dares not to want to give all that they have grafted for away to bureaucrats to distribute among the less fortunate and feckless. It seems that not wanting free student grants, or LGBT drop in centres, or actually wanting controlled immigration is akin to gassing millions of Jews and embarking upon a blitzkrieg.

The idiots throwing insults around like cheap confetti need to take a long, hard look at themselves. Tory does not equal Nazi.

Absolutely nothing in post 23 to infer that the Tories are the far right

I made it very clear I was talking about Eastern Europe. You chose to start talking about Tories.

It's just crazy that all over Europe the far right is on the march to the extent that it is. Nazi salute openly displayed in football matches, ridiculous racist governments being elected in eastern europe and now this. Alarming times and normal thinking people have got to peacefully but firmly say that this is unacceptable

My comment was in response to post #23, try reading it before popping at me.

I read post #23. It referred to the rise of the far right, Nazi salutes at the football and the issue in Germany.

Nothing about Tories.

But we’re not in Europe are we? It’s after October 31st and I was assured by our Prime Minister we would definitely be out by then. So it’s clear I was talking about a totally separate entity. Hold on, I’ll just check that definitely went through

Nearly three and a half years on and still some people think that if we leave the EU we won't be in Europe anymore. :wozza:

Right wing nationalists parties are gaining traction across the continent. Pegida themselves have attempted to expand across Europe. Tommy Robinson started a branch in the UK in an attempt to woo the middle classes that found EDL loutishness unpalatable.

Idiotic comment! When we leave the EU we won't be in the EU any more. Nobody has suggested we won't be part of Europe any more, that's just a cheap sneer. We were in Europe for centuries before we joined the Common Market and subsequently the EU, and we'll still be part of Europe this year, next year, next century, etc., etc.

I think you are the idiot. Did you not see the post I quoted that said the Prime Minister promised that we'd be out of Europe by October 31st?

This is exactly the point I was looking to make.

All across the continent, far right parties are increasing their influence. This is emboldening racist people to be more brazenly open about it than ever before (like in the earlier examples about nazi salutes at international football matches and this thing going on in Dresden)

The far right is on the march and the rest of us can’t just bury our heads in the sand and hope it goes away.

I have no idea you’d think surrounded by 10 country’s they’d be far more open to different nationalities but no. The old East German education system was one of the best and has been adopted by a few countries. Some of the newer issues would be from when they opened the gates to the refugees. I was living in heidenau at the time which had a very large camp. My stepdaughter had several school friends raped seemingly by said refugees which didn’t help. It wasn’t an area known for rapes etc and in a matter of weeks it was very clear that you didn’t let girls out alone

You can provide credible links to these alleged 'several' rapes? I've lived in Blasewitz since well before the refugee influx and am close to & know Heidenhau well. I'm calling BS.

I know Dresden. The image of the city & Pegada is overstated. These days they get a handful of followers to their Monday evening meets in the Altstadt. Whenever Pegida have a march, opposition protesters always heavily outnumber them. Pegidas view of the world isn't shared by the majority of the city. Many Pegada and extremists aren't from the city, but less enlightened rural towns & elsewhere. Places such as Freital, Bautzen, Gorlitz plus Heidenhau are known past hotspots and have had instances of extremists attacking refugees & their properties. The city of Dresden itself is no different to other large urban areas - a diverse population of locals, students, 2nd generation Germans & immigrants who go about their lives as normal. Like any city, it will of course have its share of idiots & those with intolerant views. To be expected anywhere. Not to the extent of the popular image cultivated in much of the media. It just aint so.......

As someone who knows nothing about the local cultures of Germany... why is it like that?

Is it because of lack of education or affluence, or something else?

I'm no expert but the East is still lagging behind in terms of wealth and employment.

Just read about a study last year which suggests that economic factors are not the primary cause. It concluded that, in a hangover from their communist past, East Germans had an "exaggerated need for harmony, 'purity' and order" as well as a "collective, overwhelmingly positive and ethnically pure identity." https://www.dw.com/en/study-links-far-right-extremism-and-eastern-german-mentality/a-38892657
