[Help] Drains blocked/smell

Hi NSC,

Any recommendations please for a firm to identify/clear the cause of a blockage and ensuing awful stink (reminiscent of Smellhurst), somewhere between our house and our road's sewers.

We're in Brighton.

The sky's the limit on some specialist's pricing, which I want to avoid!

Just an FYI, but if the blockage is off your property boundary, then your water company would clear it for free.

its not important where it is anymore, its whether it is communal or not. if only serves your house you have to pay, if others waste goes through its communal. Southern will probably check and may even fix if its your pipe the first time.

I was also about to recommend Sean at SF Drainage until I saw the above post but now I can second that recommendation. I used him only about two weeks ago and a couple of times prior to that over the previous few years. We have problem drains and he has always managed to sort the problem out. Before using Sean we were calling drain clearers on a regular basis. We only have the need to call him about once every three years or so. He charges a flat rate of £70.

Exactly this. Easiest way to find out if its a shared drain is to ask the neighbours on either side if their drain is blocked too - if so the water company are obliged to come and clear it.

Dyno-Rod did a good job with my parents' blocked drain in our back yard, although this was some years ago. Think they're a national group, so fairly competitive prices IIRC.

I used Happy Drains of Southwick a couple of years back. Very efficient and reasonable price.

Suggest you have a go yourself....get yourself some drain rods. Mine blocks approx once a year usually some cloth of some sort flushed down loo.

Hi. Three manholes on that run, I checked them on Sunday. The one just on my property, near the pavement, has a couple of inches of liquid build up in it and stunk. The other 2 nearer the house clear. Smell has been around for about 10 days, but since yesterday it had made its way now to the downstairs loo. I had thought that was impossible, as the water in its u-bend sealed drains air from getting into the house.

Sounds like first drain needs a good rodding, check all 3 again to see if it's started backing up

I spent 6 odd years at a water and sewerage utility and think most of the companies are similar in the way they work. They will attend unless they can confirm 100% it isn't them over the phone. This is far more difficult these days.

Call your water company out first. My understanding of the rule changes is that it is their responsibility if it is either shared or off your land. You can call them and ask to investigate and they may find there is an issue in their drainage causing the issue to yourself. They will be a pain in the arse to get money out of if you call a private contractor and then try and get the money back from them should it prove to not be a private issue.

As many others have said as well, they may just fix it free of charge. The comanies will try and stop this happening to maximise profits but the majority of the drainage crews are decent blokes and, if not very busy, often bored and not direct employees meaning they don't really care too much about the overall profits of a monopoly

Has a similar problem a few years ago, called Southern Water and they fixed it, we were on end of a communal run, blockage caused by disposable nappies and wipes. They could have not been more helpful.

exactly this, we had a problem and southern contractor came out. he asks if the drain was shared, i said not sure, must merge in with the neighbour somewhere, when it was obvious it did the merge at the point under the manhole. "OK, i better unblock then" said he.

after another incident they sent a camera up and the drain was knackered. covered under home insurance for couple grand to have them dig up and replace few meters of pipe.

It was so bad I had to stay in a local hotel because I couldn't get anyone out to fix. As did my neighbour.

Next day a company had to close the road and use what I can only describe as a humongous s##t hoover attached to the back of a lorry.

Everything was blocked with a combination of a number of houses historical turdish and builders rubble that had been thrown down before I moved in.

The sound of the rubble and fermenting logs being sucked at high speed up the mechanical elephant's trunk was deeply deeply satisfying. I often reminisce when having a particularly violent clear out.
