Went to my son in laws Birthday BBQ over the weekend and his sister was there with their 5 week old son. She's not married to her partner, the father They've given him a double barreled surname, his and hers, because if the kid just had the dads surname, she would need to get his written permission to take the son abroad without him.

Making it double barreled prevents this. As the dad works on ships, it's a very good chance they'll go overseas to meet him at various ports in the future.

Apparently for kidnapping reasons.One aspect of double barreled surname I hadn't thought of.

She really wouldn't have, but it can cause delays while they establish she's definitely the mother.
The very simple workaround is you stick an official copy of the birth certificate inside the child's passport.
I know all this because my missus has no truck with marriage or double barreled surnames.

Me and my wife combined our surnames to make a new one when we got married. It would have been too long if we double barrelled it, and we were fortunate that our names had good prefixes and suffixes that combined nicely. We had couple of options that were actual surnames rather than something that sounds made up.

I think it's a good option for people where it works for their surnames. Maybe not if your names are Cockburn and Sidebottom though

Not only do the family still own the land, they earned fortunes in "compensation" for given up their slaves. Everyone's a winner if your surname is Drax.

The family were "pioneers" of slavery and their model was copied.

They should have given the land back years ago, they apparently have no shame. No surprise he's a proper frothing at the mouth looney, having huge issues with immigration with no sense of irony at all.

That was an appalling post. They should be thankful for the Drax family ? Hold your head in shame.

One of the longest brick walls in the UK around Drax estate. 2 million bricks. Built in 1842 and includes some decent sized gates!! A31 goes round two sides of it and the wall seems to go on for miles.

I don’t like him or his family. In terms of politics and things that he says and supports, I am just about totally diametrically opposed to everything he stands for and votes for.

in terms of the Caribbean stuff, 30,000 slaves dying on his family’s estates is nearly enough to fill the AMEX. I would guess/trust that now he is not using slaves(!) and for all I know he or his organisation might be a model employer. I have not suggested he close the plantations and sack all his workers. The fact that the Barbados government is after him according to the second paragraph of his Wikipedia entry below would suggest that he is not popular over there and is not looking to win friends and influence people And is not “doing an awful lot of good in that community now in providing jobs.”

The Barbados Government is seeking reparations from Drax for his ancestors' involvement in slavery.[31] The Reparations Commission wants Drax Hall to be returned to Barbados, to be made into a museum. If this request is refused, the government intends to take the matter to an international arbitration court.[32]
