On my BMW, in the snow. When it is icy on the roads and the traction control is shouting, If you put the car into first, lift the clutch and DO NOT press the accelerator, the car will engage and start to drive away and will continue.

This is really handy if your tyres are not gripping when pulling away using the accelerator.

seemly its only modern cars that do this ( older ones stall)

Mine's an old one (1996) with no traction control but if you lift the clutch slowly when in 1st without pressing the accelerator it will pull away on it's own. It's generally pretty hopeless in this weather being a rear-wheel drive. Newer models might be better, but mine is pretty awful at times.

ha ha......after many years of driving fords and Renaults, its nice to have a decent car( although not when service time comes around)

To be honest that wasn't the point....seemly most new cars of all makes have this but it is something that is not widely publicised....and if it helps people get up snowy/icy hills then all the better

You don't have to be driving a rich persons car!

I drive an 8-year old Golf, which doesn't have any of the new-fangled features mentioned above.

Fortunately I have more sense than money, when the weather is this crap and the advice is not to travel unless the journey is vital I do exactly that, my car is sat in the road outside my house and will probably remain there for some time.

erm - every car that i have ever owned has been able to do that. Including a 1979 Ford Fiesta when i was 17. Older cars will not stall if you are gentle on the clutch. Fancy cars or money have nothing to do with it, it's about being able to drive.
