The friendlies we won were against crap opposition.

When we've come up against anyone half decent like Le Havre last week we've struggled badly.

Face facts mate we,re in for a rough ride this season.

Albion Beaten By Dons

By Paul Camillin, at The National Hockey Stadium

MK Dons beat Albion 4-1 tonight with goals from Lloyd Dyer (2), Izale McLeod and Clive Platt. Paul Reid grabbed a late consolation for the Seagulls.

With the new season just eight days away Mark McGhee admitted he is a concerned man after seeing his side slump to a disappointing 4-1 defeat at MK Dons this evening.

However, he told seagulls.co.uk he does hope to add up to three new faces ahead of the season's opening match at Rotherham next Saturday.

Martin Allen's side - tipped to be League 2 promotion contenders - took the lead in the first-half as Clive Platt chipped the ball over Wayne Henderson after 33 minutes.

Dons trialist Lloyd Dyer - a half-time substitute - doubled the lead early in the second half, racing through to slot the ball past Michel Kuipers.

Izale McLeod scored in similar fashion to make it 3-0, before the impressive Dyer completed the scoring with a curling free-kick from 20 yards.

Paul Reid gave the one hundred or so Albion fans something to cheer with a late consolation: a low drive from the left that nestled in the bottom right corner of the net.

McGhee said, "I'm very concerned. It wasn't just a case of the young players - who were know are not ready - finding it difficult; it was also about a lot of the experienced players and I was disappointed with a lot of the performances - it's a concern.

"The fact is we're desperately trying to bring in bodies. I have no doubt on Saturday [next week] we will have two maybe even three players in.

"I have said to the players tonight, if players come in people will lose their places in the team; people will lose their places on the bench; and people will end up sitting in the stand.

"If they sit in the stand too long, they'll be out of here. People are putting their futures on the line with performances like that."

The players certainly won't be sitting around tomorrow; they will report for a hastily arranged extra training session at Falmer in the morning.

Albion: Henderson (Kuipers); Hart, Elphick, El-Abd, Reid; Brittain (Loft), Carpenter, Hammond, Frutos (Cox); Kazim-Richards, Robinson (Revell). Subs not used: Gatting, Rents, Breach.

We don't seem to have changed much from last season then. :nono:

indeed. Loft looked ok for the short time he was on the pitch. Other positives were Cox, who looked quite lively, and Brittain, who delivered some good balls... however, there was no-one to get on the end of them

I think Dean Cox has excelled himself in pre-season and deserves to be in the squad for Rotherham.

We need to sign a natural left back. Reid just isn't up to it. I rate him as a midfielder but definitely not as a left back

Who said it was? Can't remember anyone saying that.

Selective memory loss I think.

it wasn't that long ago loads of people were saying on here how we'd win the league, get in the play offs etc.

Possibly reaching the play-offs is very different from 'walking it'.

However, if we appear not to have improved, then I would show concern. However, I never go to pre-season friendlies, one, because they are usually a farce (two entirely different teams playing in each half) meaning, two, they have litttle or no bearing on how we will fare during the season itself.

Beating Colchester and losing to MK Dons offers little indication of what we are capable of, especially if we don't use players that played in those matches.

But McGhee does sound pissed off with an apparent lack of effort - something we clearly closed last season with, and tomorrow's hastily arranged training session is probably going to come with its own 18-Certificate and bleep machine.

It still doesn't get away from the fact that we've offloaded a few players, saving on their wages and managed to get nobody of any note.

I'm not interested in who we "might" have got but they turned us down at the last minute.

At the moment my decision not to renew my season ticket is looking a good one.

just got back from the game. It was awful. Long ball after long ball without anyone to hold it up or flick it on. CKR looked completely disinterested, had a few long range efforts but not much else. Hammond was pretty poor, just couldn't keep hold of the ball. One of their goals was clearly offside but even so, we were still terrible tonight.

I thought maybe we were going back to basics by giving players confidence on the ball by playing a passing game judging by the movement off the ball at Bognor and Worthing?

Was it really route one football?

If I recall we offloaded what, four first-team or fringe first-team players - which is not that many for a club in our position. One of whom retired, one of whom couldn't really grasp his chance and has found a place at another club, one was utter shite, and the other the jury is still out on.

What do you call 'anybody of note'? We need good third tier quality players to see us through this season. Who 'of note' would fit that bill? Have you already written off Alex Revell and the ten youngsters?

Are you saying your decision to re-new wrested on who we got in pre-season? I'm not saying that we are not going to find it tougher than we - alright, I - first thought, but I think I'll give up my season ticket when I know we're well and truly f***ed in the arse, going nowhere with no future - and I think we're a long long way from that.

Pretty much. Most balls completely bypassed the midfield, and when balls were played into feet, the forward players just didn't seem to want to run at anyone or take anyone on

I'm afraid there is a serious lack of competition for places in the following areas:

Left back- (lynch with kerry as back up with reid filling in but he isnt really competing for that position)

Centre half- Simply not enough options

Central midfield- Hammond and Chippy almost certainties to start every game

Left wing- Frutos, jarret out of favour no other options

Lapse performances are to be expected when MM makes it so obvious what his favourite players are in certain positions. Although its obvious for certain players eg mc shane when we had him players like Reid and Nicholas while they were here must be looking at the centre of midfield and wondered what they possibly have to do to get a run in the side.

The only positions where players are fighting for a starting role is the second striking role along with CKR and in goal.

Well it will be interesting to see how we respond to that performance.

Martin Allen i am sure would have had well fired up if only we could see a MA on the Albion track suit again.

They've still all gone and not been replaced. It doesn't matter how you dress it up.

The fact that we offered contracts to the 10 youth teamers said it all really about what sort of side we would be putting out.

My decision not to renew was more to do with the fact that I went home angry, pissed off and depressed nearly every other week last season and I couldn't see anything changing in the close season.

I'll stick to going to away games thanks it's more fun.

TO be fair to 'Mad Dog' he's signed a few decent players in the close season and his animated touchline antics seemed to spur on his players tonight. Don't think he's quite on a par with the other MA though!
