Just looking at some of these figures reminds me again of how much I would have loved to have been at some of those 77/78 and 78/79 games, having started going the season after. Must have been brilliant.

It was, believe me. I am currently controling the booking of flights out of here on Friday 5th August. I am sorely tempted to put my name on the list!

April 1978 - quite a busy time at The Goldstone.

97,281 in the last three home matches of the season.

Too right! the piss stench from the north stand urinals was still wofting around Hove Park in the summer..

And NO! saints and spurs WE HAVE NOT FORGOTTEN!

These might be our historic rivals rather than Southampton, West Ham, Millwall, and Watford.

So if we average (as expected) will put us top of the pile. Look at pompey in the mid 90's looks like about 7-8k av.

As far as I can see, the 10 largest home league attendances are
Code:
27.12.58 FL D2 Fulham 36,747
3.5.72 FL D3 Rochdale 34,766
24.2.76 FL D3 Crystal Palace 33,300
29.4.78 FL D2 Blackpool 33,431
2.1.78 FL D2 Southampton 32,979
15.4.78 FL D2 Tottenham 32,647
28.10.78 FL D2 West Ham 32,634
27.3.70 FL D3 Reading 32,036
22.8.58 FL D2 Aston Villa 31,828
26.4.65 FL D4 Darlington 31,423

I went to eight of them, missing the first and the last. Rochdale was so crushed it was over capacity. But the biggest crowd (if the ground was big enough) would have been for the Chelsea FA Cup game in the sixties. As far as paying customers its was 47,000+

Not sure about that.

I thought I'd been at a bank holiday afternoon game against Charlton in the late 70s when more than 34,000 turned up. There must have been several gates above 25,485 in that era.
Sorry, should have added before 1960,smacked botty and sent to bed.

The Boxing Day 1958 game vs Fulham is always credited to have been our record attendance but I will always maintain until my last breath that the crowd for Div III South promotion game vs Watford was larger as the ground was full and the cinder track around the Goldstone was full of children. Any other old timers remember this?
True, but the Fulham game was the same, the Watford game was more enjoyable though for Adrian Thornes five goals.

How about Brighton v Blackpool last game of 77-78 season I think when we won 2-0 but did not go up as Spurs and Southampton played out a boring 0-0 so both went up instead of us. Seem to recall over 33,000 at that one I was jammed in on the East Terrace....Nobby penalty and ward scored if my memory is right. Also had over 32,000 against Derby in League cup Ward scored in first minute but we lost the replay, that might have been 76 or 77!!

Only 14. Gates closed against Rochdale with huge queues (thousands) outside. It should have been 15.
