The two US presidential candidates are to face each other in their first TV debate, in what could be a defining moment of the election campaign.
Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton will take to the stage in New York on Monday night.
The duel at Hofstra University could be the most watched debate in television history, with 100 million viewers.
There are 43 days until the election, with one poll on Monday suggesting some movement towards Mr Trump.
The poll, by Bloomberg, shows he holds a lead over his Democrat rival when third-party nominees are taken into account, and that they are tied in a head-to-head contest.
While other polls give Mrs Clinton a small lead, a joint poll between the Washington Post and ABC News on Sunday showed the two to be in a virtual dead heat.

I think Clinton won that quite conclusively. Trump came over as a bit of a prat.

Clinton had done her homework while Trump was out gallivanting.

She skewered him convincingly on several things - his failure to submit his tax returns and the myth about what a great real estate baron and businessman he is (he isn't - he started off using a $14M loan from daddy; bankrupted many contractors and suppliers by refusing to pay them what they were due; and took advantage of the law to declare himself bankrupt 4 times). He countered by bringing up the e mail charges again. He seemed a bit taken aback when she admitted full liability and said with hindsight she would have done things differently. I guess everyone is waiting to see if Wiki Leaks releases any more

But having said that I'm not sure that it will make a big difference to the way his supporters feel about him, it may make a few undecideds favor Hillary. What might change things a bit is if he were to be charged with tax evasion by using his tax exempt charity foundation inappropriately - but it would be difficult to make those charges stick.

Yip. I don't think anyone who supports him really gives a shit if he lies constantly and comes out with racist stuff. And he knows that. People need to start talking about the stuff that *might* make them change their mind, like being worse off under him.

I've just watched the whole debate as live.

My American political reference points are all pro Hillary, I thought she was superb and very presidential.

Halfway through I really tried to put my prejudices behind me and be more Trumpian, but I just couldn't do it.
I couldn't see any appeal in the man, he just self promoted at the expense of everybody else.

Oh and a special mention for the fact I haven't laughed so much at a programme for ages.
Probably about 50/50 when it comes to intentional lines and more 'The Office' based moments.

I want to vote for this guy.

http://edition.cnn.com/2016/09/26/politics/donald-trump-federal-income-taxes-smart-debate/
Washington (CNN)When Hillary Clinton said that her Republican rival Donald Trump had paid no federal income tax in some years, Trump didn't deny it.

In fact, he said: "That makes me smart."
After the debate, he told CNN's Jim Acosta: "Of course I've paid federal taxes."
Clinton was pressing Trump for not releasing his tax returns for public scrutiny. Trump has said he won't release his tax returns until a routine audit is complete, though every major party presidential candidate over the past 40 years have released tax returns.
"There is something he is hiding," Clinton said of Trump during the debate.

"Or maybe he doesn't want the American people, all of you watching tonight, to know that he's paid nothing in federal taxes, because the only years that anybody's ever seen were a couple of years when he had to turn them over to state authorities when he was trying to get a casino license, and they showed he didn't pay any federal income tax," she said.
"That makes me smart," Trump said.
Trump also said he would release his tax returns when Clinton made public 33,000 emails that were deleted from her private email server.

I'm watching now on iplayer. The overriding feeling that I get is that Trump is a very sh1t politician!

He's completely out of his depth and obviously winging it. His debating style is dreadful, he keeps using the same words over and over again and he's not really putting any coherent points across.

Trump the narcissist is now blaming his microphone for his poor performance.

Couldn't possibly be that he has any faults at all.

I was surprised how long it took for 'Make America Great Again' to rear it's ugly head.
I can't understand why Hillary doesn't say words to the effect of 'stop slagging off America'.

I thought Trump strayed too far from 'the Washington bubble has ruined America' to just 'America has been ruined'.

Although with all that said, it'll make no difference:-

Moderator came across a bit like The Complete And Utter Shyster, made himself the star of the show. Both did nothing to further their position and neither did anything to make it suffer either, it just got a bit cringey when the moderator was quite blatant in his bias towards HC.

The only one who came out of that debate badly is the mod, online polls almost all have Trump winning the debate, seen plenty of others saying he sucked. HC voters will still vote HC, DT voters will still vote DT and the moderator looked an idiot.

Did you watch the whole debate.

I thought the moderator was really good.
He let them duke it out, but held enough discipline to keep the debate on track and moving forward.

It's not possible to hold Trump to account on all his rhetoric, but when Holt did go after BS he stood firm.
