I called him a 'prick', not because of his opinion of the Albion -which favourable or otherwise, he's entitled to - but because he's basing it on a lack of insight, knowledge or research, into the league that he is PAID to follow. THAT is why I consider him, Hinchcliffe and the others to be pricks.

Just like when (current French international and darling of the French media) Hatem Ben Arfa scored on his debut for Newcastle, and Alan Shearer announced on MotD "We don't know a thing about this kid Ben Arfa..."

Totally. There is definitely a place for knowledgeable ex-Pros, but only if they are prepared to actually do some research to earn their money. Ideally a mix of (decent) ex-Pros and knowledgeable journos. The difference in KNOWLEDGE between the likes of Shearer and Goodman, and the likes of Guillem Balague and Rafi Honigstein, is massive. The insight the ex-players can add, of the inside of the changing room, only goes so far, IMO.

Was there one pundit who predicted before the start of last season that Bournemouth would get promoted? And how many pundits trotted out the cliché that you can't get promotion without stability, then watched Watford get through 4 managers and reach the Prem?

There are far too many pundits earning an easy living who don't do their research into what is going on. The likes of Guilleme Balague and Gary Neville clearly do put in a lot of hours and deserve what they get, but dozens are winging it.

As someone who doesn't get Sky but has watched plenty of it over the years, they've always seemed too obsessed with using former players as broadcasters, irrespective of how good they are. Presumably their thinking is that a gormless Sky punter (if such a thing existed) will recognise them and think "I remember him playing, wonder what he's like as a pundit?". All very glossy, very superficial.
