[Food] Domino’s Pizza closes in Italy

I wouldn't be upset if they shut down here to be honest but a lot of people would be.

They have a branch opposite my local and they have at least three drivers working every night. What makes it even more puzzling how busy it is every day is that two doors down in a Firezza which is excellent and cheaper.

Lots of gushing over Italians on this thread.

They definitely appreciate local businesses which is great but the problem I have with Italy is that they only do their own cuisine well. So hard to get decent food outside their own type and specific region.

Hence why London destroys any of the major Italian cities foodwise.

Gushing over Italian food yes, surely one of the great cujisines of the world, but not Italians per se.

Besides, when and if l am in Italy l am only interested in savouring the best that that particularly country ihas to offer, so l'm not too concerned how they go about cooking anything else.

After all l don't visit Italy for fish and chips, or chicken tikka masala.

One of the many benefits of a multicultural society. London for a foodie destination, in terms of quality and variety must be right up there with the best.

I can still remember my last dominos. I was very hungry and relatives were "treating" us but it was still vile. Greasy salty stodge makes it sound better than it is, because if someone described a dish I'd never had as greasy salty stodge I'd definitely try it.

Do them a favour and name them. The name check might help their business. I live near Hangleton so I might try it myself instead of the Dominoe's which is also near me. Do they do takeaway?

Pizzalicious on Hangleton Way ( just down from Acorn Vets ). They do indeed do takeaway but also deliver locally.

Yes wood fired is best but a lot of effort, can get the stone to 500c in 15 mins with gas. Pizza cooks in about 90 seconds

I guess the thing with Starbucks is that they're offering something different. I mean you're not going to get a pumpkin mocha chai latte in your average Italian bar. But added to that they can tempt teens in with the offer of comfy sofas to hang out on as opposed to the Italian tradition of being in and out in the time it takes to down an espresso. And, of course, kids are often a sucker for a bit of branding.

That's my rationale anyway as I doubt anyone's going there for the quality of the coffee (disclaimer: I don't think I've ever had a coffee from Starbucks so maybe it's great and I'm missing out).

Domino's was always destined to fail though due to the price and quality. Why pay whatever they charge when you can pick up an excellent pizza for 5 euros?

But has Domino's actually failed? Let's face it even if they closed their doors for the last time tomorrow, they would still have made their owners an awful lot of money.

Maybe when the business empire was set up the owners knew it was going to have a shelf life, and that Joe Public would fall out of love with it eventually.

We're talking about Giuseppe Public though. They planned to open 800 branches in Italy by 2030 but only made it to 29 outlets before filing for bankruptcy.

Best pizza I ever had is a beachside restaurant in Corfu, proper wood-fired over, the works. Worst, Dominos, I'd rather get a pasty from a petrol station.

Thats akin to taking coal to Newcastle, and the coal being of particularly low quality.

They deserve to fail in my opinion.

Well they should know how to cook pizza in the Ionian Islands, thousands of Italian servicemen were stationed there in World War 2.

On a recent trip to Milan we did notice not only do the Italians go to the local pizza restaurant they also dress for the occasion, saying that most people in Milan are well dressed.

Never felt so scruffy as when I visited Milan. Everyone looked a million dollars.
