can anybody reccommend any good web hosts, last year i paid 70 odd quid to use skymarket but would like something cheaper i think ...

I would always recommend moving your domain to somewhere like 1&1 as it gives you ultimate control of your domain should your host decide to go belly up.

Shared hosting providers are typically shit. I got so hacked off with them I lease a dedicated server even though I currently only use about 1/10th of it's capacity.

i don't quite understand that - the ins and outs are quite confusing, care to shed any light - just a wee glossary of terms.

The domain name is only the name of your website. ie www.northstandchat.biz. The domain name is like an entry in the phone book - it's just a 'record' that sits in a big directory that points to your website. You can maintain your entry in the phone book through any number of registrars - 1&1 being one of them.

The HOST is the owner of the server that you put all of your website files on. You'll typically find most of these have about 400 different websites on any 1 server - hence the term 'Shared Hosting'. For busier websites a dedicated server is often required - similar to that of NSC. ie. Only NSC runs on this server.

I would also recommend 1&1, I have 5 sites hosted by them, it's really straight forward to set everything up and there's loads of help files too in case you get stuck. As others have said, I also have never had a problem with them either.
