Vets are notorious for overcharging ,if theres anything untoward going on your insurance company should pick up on it ,also the vet should give you a break down of the bill ,overnight stay at vets should be no more than £12 unless there are extenuating circumstances i.e. animal on a drip etc .

I've had 3 springers in my life, they always got fed their own food and a bit of what was left over from the dinner. They all lived longer than average for springers.

Does sound excessive for a nights stay, unless it was intensive care and required constant monitoring, which it deosn't sound like it did.
Unless your dog is seriously allergic to some foods (which is common, but the vets wouldn't have doen the tests to ascertain if this is the case.. v expensive) I don't see any real problems with feeding them what you eat. Dogs are omnivors, so they require vegetables in their diet as well as meat. Ok some of the dry food is, very heavily, veg based, but theres no real substitute for the real thing. Ours regularly have the leftovers from the roast or evening meal and they lap it up. The rest if the time they get fed a Bones and Raw Food (BARF) diet, with the exception of one who has some allergies.

However, even if they aren't allergic to anything, dogs still have things they can't eat, such as onions, grapes, broccoli, chillis/pepper, chocolate etc. Similalry, rice can be dodgy if its not freshly cooked (as with humans). Some of these in excess can be fatal very quickly.

Our one who suffers from allergies is on a prescription diet mainly, but still gets the veg. The vet has told us that they don't believe we keep to the anti-allergic food as we don't buy it from them and its hard to get hold of. However we get it about half price we'd pay at the vets in bulk online, and they finally believed us when I slapped an invoice for 6 bags of the stuff in front of them.

For our three we pay about £90 per month in insurance!!!

No I dont mean Palace female fans....

My vet has just charged me ( actually) my insurance company £1200 for a nights stay for my spinger in doggy hospital.

I am sure he saw the insurance policy and started adding different tests.

How much is an average night in doggy hospital?

and of course he has said we need to bring the now seemingly cured mutt back for more tests.

The insurance excess is £50 so its not budget breaking.....

NOw he also says dont give the dog human food.....he is a 1 year old Springer we adopted 2 months ago..

With previous dogs we always gave them cooked meat ie chicken or liver the wife even brought some up to eat rice ( being a filipina)

The wonderful vet said he should be fed only a kind of biscuit food, I know I am not a vet but all our dogs before had a varied diet and it never effected them.

Any thoughts?

I have dealt with enough vets to know this is typical

and you done the right think insuring the little one
